R&D Senior Accounting Manager COMPANY DESCRIPTION: Our client develops life-changing medicines for patients using advanced structure-based and computational drug discovery technology. The company's platform combines the latest advancements in visualization of molecular interactions, computational chemistry, and data integration to design orally available, superior small molecule medicines that overcome current limitations of biologic and peptide drugs. They are advancing a clinical-stage pipeline of differentiated treatments focused on chronic diseases with high unmet need, including cardiovascular, metabolic, and pulmonary conditions. LOCATION: South San Francisco, CA. Hybrid. 3 days per week. Position Summary The R&D Sr . Accounting Manager is an integral part of a growing accounting team and oversees the R&D-related accounting close process primarily focused on Research and Development accruals with the Research and Development Teams in Shanghai and the United States. This position will partner extensively with the Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) team to ensure a thorough understanding of various R&D programs, in-licensing milestone achievements and lead the accurate and timely completion of the R&D-related accounting close. Responsibilities Manage the monthly R&D-related accounting close to ensure accurate and timely completion of expenses, prepayments and deposits, and accrual accounts. This involves communication with the R&D Teams in Shanghai as well as the U.S. Attend R&D project team meetings and review project management portfolio updates to better understand the status of the company's R&D programs to better facilitate the R&D accrual process Review and/or prepare journal entries and related supporting work papers; ensure the quality of work product complies with SOX requirements Review and analyze invoices, read contracts, and compare/ reconcile data to POs, budgets, SOW's and/or work orders to determine the appropriate accounting treatments Prepare R&D contract accounting analysis for the R&D contracts and supporting associated PO's and SOW, to ensure proper accounting treatment for the accruals and prepaids Prepare and review the R&D budget tracker workbook and ensure appropriate accounting estimates in the R&D tracker Develop and maintain R&D accruals using various methodologies including % of completion, FTE reimbursement rates, etc. Prepare R&D fluctuation analysis by segments (e.g., subsidiaries, programs, phases, etc.) as well as R&D-related general ledger account fluctuation analysis on a monthly basis Review and/or prepare general ledger account reconciliations and other R&D analyses requested by management on a monthly basis Liaison between the R&D project teams and FP&A team regarding the monthly R&D Research accruals under review; guide the proper accounting treatment of R&D-related transactions Coordinate with the Head of Finance and Controller in China and other accounting U.S. team members in identifying, researching, and documenting significant accounting matters Manage the quarterly review, interim and year-end audit, and tax requirements related to R&D-associated activities; drive closure of any internal/ external request/open items on a timely basis Identify opportunities to reduce the R&D-related accounting close cycle, enhance existing procedures Assist the Controller and other members of the accounting team on ad hoc projects, as needed Education, Experience & Skills Requirements BA/BS degree in accounting; CPA preferred 8+ years of progressive experience (combination of big 4 in Biotech clients with expertise in auditing R&D accounts and clinical stage biotech/pharma industry experience) - Highly preferred Experience with Netsuite Strong work ethic and ability to thrive in a complex environment handling different R&D programs of various affiliates and subsidiaries Able to work with a high volume of transactions in a fast-paced environment Results and goal-oriented mindset with an opportunistic eye toward process improvements Excellent communication and written skills and collaborative mindset with FP&A and the R&D scientific project owners Determining compensation for this role (and others) at Vaco depends upon a wide array of factors including but not limited to the individual's skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, office location and other geographic considerations, as well as other business and organizational needs. With that said, as required by local law, Vaco believes that the following salary range reasonably estimates the base compensation for an individual hired into this position in geographies that require salary range disclosure: $120,000-$175,000. The individual may also be eligible for discretionary bonuses.
