Patient Care Technician, 8 South Neurology

UPMC Hamot is hiring a Patient Care Technician to join the team on 8 South Neurology! It includes 2 care beds for epilepsy monitoring. The unit treats conditions like CVAs, seizures, and other neurological disorders. It also cares for patients undergoing neurosurgical procedures, such as craniotomies, back surgeries, and more. Previous experience in direct patient care required Title and salary will be determined based upon education and experience. Responsibilities: Provides patient care including assisting with procedures and activities of daily living. Assists with physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies. Provides feedback to RN regarding patient care and reports changes in patient status. Performs core nursing assistant responsibilities: blood glucose, weights, vital signs, I&O, specimen collections, Foley care. Performs at least four additional tasks: phlebotomy, 12-lead EKG, simple dressing, Foley catheter removal, point of care testing, bladder scan, straight catheter, or IV catheter removal. Reports equipment malfunctions to the appropriate department. Establishes effective communication with other departments. Maintains professional and respectful interpersonal relationships. Contributes to unit activities: responding to call lights, passing meal trays, and transporting patients. Receives and acts on feedback; identifies learning needs and seeks to improve knowledge and skills. Provides patient and family instruction under RN direction; may manage patient restraints per protocol. Demonstrates clear communication and cultural competence. Adheres to all patient care policies, safety policies, and standard precautions. Supports department changes, quality initiatives, and views challenges as opportunities. Documents in medical records according to established procedures. Completes work in a timely, productive manner; handles department clerical functions as needed. Achieves and maintains competencies in advanced skills: phlebotomy, peripheral IV removal, Foley catheter removal, basic arrhythmia, 12-lead EKG, and NG tube management. Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies and behaviors. Performs other duties as assigned. High school diploma or equivalent required. Must have one of the following: - 1 year of general healthcare experience - 6 months of experience as UPMC Nursing Assistant/CNA with PCT competency achieved within 120 days of hire/transfer/promotion - Enrollment in PT/OT/PA program or related healthcare training program with completion of at least one clinical rotation - Completion of a bachelor's degree in a health sciences field Successful completion of UPMC patient care technician class required. Successful completion of basic information system training required. Microcomputer experience preferred. Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing required. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic, or current enrollment in an EMT or Paramedic program preferred. Access to medications is limited to distribution to the nurse. Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances: Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire. ACLS preferred.
