Position Type: Maintenance/Custodial/HVAC Technician Date Posted: 11/1/2024 Location: Maintenance Shop Closing Date: Until Filled Who We Are: Waukegan Community Unit School District No. 60 serves nearly 15,500 students in preschool through grade 12 and is located halfway between Chicago, Illinois and Milwaukee, Wisconsin on the shores of Lake Michigan. The District has one early learning center, 15 elementary schools, five middle schools and a high school program divided between two 9th - 12th grade campuses. The District encompasses portions of Waukegan, Beach Park and Park City. What We Need: The HVAC Technician will be directly responsible to the Director of Operations and/or his designee. Responsibilities : Operate, maintain and repair all types of environmental systems installed in the Waukegan School system buildings; Install, troubleshoot and repair all fixed and portable electrical equipment including but not limited to motors, wiring, conduit, electrical and HVAC devices; Perform required preventative maintenance procedures on all environmental equipment and system; Perform tasks such as snow plowing, delivery work, and other duties as assigned by the Director of Operations or his designee; Direct unskilled help assigned to assist with installation, repair or preventive maintenance procedures. The following specific duties are typical but not necessarily all of the duties involved in this position. Employees currently employed in these positions will when necessary be provided training to enable them to do work assigned for which they feel they are not qualified. Current employees and new employees will be expected to be able to perform 80% of the specific duties listed without further training. Specific Duties: Drive a truck, loader/backhoe, delivery vehicles, snow plowing equipment and similar equipment and perform other related activities; Make all installations and repairs in a neat and professional manner in accordance with all applicable codes including the National Electrical Code, Life Safety Code and the Building Codes of the City of Waukegan; Maintain hand and electrical tools; (4) To use safety procedures when using tools and equipment on jobs; Troubleshoot, repair and maintain boilers, pumps, converters, heat exchangers, compressors and all associated heating and cooling equipment; Troubleshoot and repair refrigerators and freezer equipment; Operate and maintain low pressure boilers and associated equipment; Repair and maintain environmental control systems, both pneumatic and electronic; Maintain accurate legible records of fuel consumption, pressures and temperatures and chemical test data on boilers and heating systems; Install and maintain heating systems and related equipment; Properly use test equipment for electrical and HVAC equipment troubleshooting; Work with single phase and multi-phase electrical equipment; Perform maintenance tasks of a general nature such as plumbing, electrical, sheet metal, air conditioning and carpentry as needed; Respond to heating and control systems problems during the season; Perform preventative maintenance tasks as assigned; Keep accurate records of materials and supply requisitions; Maintain and record accurate records pertaining to supplies and time spent using the district work order system; Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Operations and/or his designee. Qualifications: Must have and maintain a positive attitude; Must represent the Waukegan School District and the department of Operations in the best possible light; Must be in good health and able to perform all jobs assigned; Must be able to climb ladders and adjust to heights; Must be able to plan and lay out jobs as assigned and for their timely completion; Must be refrigerant certified or willing to obtain certificates within six months of employment; Must have 5 years of recent practical experience, and/or training in HVAC refrigeration service or a related maintenance field; Must have a good working knowledge of test equipment including but not limited to ohmmeters, volt meters, meggers phase meters, air velocity meters and refrigeration leak detection equipment; Must have a working knowledge of motors, windings, armatures, brushes and bearings, controllers, switchgear, transformers and circuit breakers; Must be able to use effectively all tools associated with electrical work including conduit benders, pliers, screwdrivers, wire cutters and strippers; Must have a working knowledge of psychometrics; Must be able to read blueprints and schematics; Must be able to accurately read wiring diagrams, control system diagrams and system diagrams; Must have knowledge of gas burners, control valves, and safety devices; Must have knowledge of pumps, impellers, and bearing assemblies; Must have willingness to continue education and training in selected trades such as obtaining and maintaining asbestos license; Must have a high school diploma or equivalent; Must have a valid driver's license; Must have own hand tools; Be able to understand written and oral instructions; Must have good communication skills; Must be able to work harmoniously with others.
