Position Title: Senior Grant Accountant Department: Operations Admin Reports to: Controller Pay Class: Full-time Regular FLSA Status: Salaried Exempt Position Summary Pacific Science Center is an independent, not-for-profit institution in Seattle and has been a gateway to access science education and innovation for nearly 60 years. The Finance & Accounting team at Pacific Science Center seeks to help the organization run a smart and responsible business. This senior accountant position is a pivotal part of our team, with a focus on grant revenue and accounts receivable. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Contributed Revenue Accounting Record and report on contributions and pledges from donors in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). Identify and maintain restricted asset schedule and releases. Accurately and timely reconcile donor management database (Tessitura) to accounting software (Activity HD). Collaborate with the Development team to ensure accurate financial reporting and compliance. Federal & State Grant Accounting Analyze expenditures charged to federal programs to ensure that they are reasonable, allocable and allowable under federal guidelines (2 CFR 200). Monitor spending and timeline on grants and timely communication with teams any variances from budget or projected shortfalls. Prepare grant invoices and request drawdowns from federal, state, and local government agencies. Work directly with program managers to ensure grant compliance and strong financial standing. Assist program managers with developing budgets for new grant applications. Assist with preparation of grant reporting as needed. Assist with calculation of fringe rates and Negotiated Indirect Cost Rate Agreement as needed. Prepare SEFA as needed. Accounts Receivable Invoicing as needed via Activity HD and monitor/reconcile receivables account in Tessitura. Collaborate with other departments to monitor receivables collection. Deposit checks and record payments, communicating with other teams for smooth monitoring of varied revenue streams. Reconcile various complex general ledger accounts as assigned. Other Duties & Responsibilities General Accounting Calculate & report on IMAX license & royalty fees. Account for all investment activity. Work with the payroll team to ensure accuracy of payroll and benefits journal entries. Assist in reporting of federal and local filings as needed. Assist with key areas of annual audit and Form 990 as assigned. Ad hoc reporting and analysis. Collaborate with other departments to implement process improvement. Cross-over support of accounts payable as needed. Other duties as assigned by the accounting manager and controller. Position Requirements Service orientation and commitment to achieving organizational and departmental goals. Ability to explain accounting topics to colleagues outside of the accounting department in simple terms. Clearly and concisely document accounting transactions and internal procedures with minimal supervision and striving for first-time quality and accuracy. Organize time, information, and resources effectively to consistently meet deadlines, including month-end close procedures, monthly reconciliations and grant billings. Ability to foresee risks that may impact deadlines and communicate status of assigned deliverables timely. Strong professional judgement in escalating complex issues to the accounting manager and controller timely. Approach challenging tasks with eagerness and respond to feedback with a growth mindset. Master accounting software (Activity HD). Strong understanding of GAAP. Work occasional evenings/weekends in support of specific deadlines such as year-end or annual audit. Qualifications Required Bachelor's degree in accounting or equivalent experience. 4+ years of professional experience in private accounting or 2+ years in public accounting Strong understanding of GAAP Preferred Experience with nonprofit accounting Experience with federal guidelines (2 CFR 200) and restricted funds management Experience with large, complex nonprofit organizations This position description generally describes the principal functions of the position, and the level of knowledge and skills typically required. Compensation Pay is based on several factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and years of experience.
