DEFINITION: Responsible for operating heavy equipment in the construction, maintenance, and repair of the City right of way infrastructure including the stormwater system, roadway surfaces, sidewalks, curb and gutter. Employees in this position will work under supervision and guidance from the assigned Crew Supervisor as well as other division staff. This employee will perform assigned tasks to meet the operational needs of the divisions. REPORTS TO: The Crew Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. JOB REQUIREMENTS Employees in this position perform routine manual and semi-skilled work in the installation, construction, repair, maintenance and care of city streets and drainage ways such as: Must be familiar with and have basic skills in the use of various hand tools and other equipment required in the performance of job tasks. Must follow field instructions and verbal directions. Responsible for the proper care and maintenance of the various tools and equipment. Maintain proper records of daily activities, including daily equipment use sheets, daily crew work sheet, and other documentation as assigned. Responsible for observing all safety rules and regulations applicable to the work location. Perform other duties and tasks as required by the division workload such as leaf collection, grass mowing, trash and debris collection, etc. Must be courteous to the public and maintain a good working relationship with fellow employees. Ability to lead crew members in absence of Crew Supervisor. Performs other related duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION AND TRAINING High School diploma or equivalent. The possession of a valid North Carolina Class B Commercial Driver's License, with the ability to obtain Class A Commercial Drives license. Flagger certification. CPR/AED and First Aid certification preferred Traffic Control Supervisor certification preferred Completion of one entry level supervisor training preferred EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE Two years of experience as a Construction Worker II, or verifiable equivalent. Knowledge of the maintenance and/or construction work and the use of hand and power tools. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIREMENTS PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Heavy work requiring lifting, moving, and carrying of maintenance and operating supplies and materials such as drainage grates, manhole covers, and other heavy objects. Employees should be able to lift and move 50 pounds. Requires climbing, walking, standing, and working in confined spaces. Ability to work in heavy vehicle traffic. Requires stooping, kneeling, balancing, bending, turning, reaching, repetitive motions, and driving trucks. MENTAL/SENSORY REQUIREMENTS Visual acuity sufficient to operate motor vehicles, powered hand tools, and other hand tools. Communicate verbally and in writing with supervisors, co-workers and the general public. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions. Ability to hear, see, speak, touch, and smell sufficiently to recognize operational problems and respond appropriately, ensuring safety of personnel and preventing equipment damage. ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS Outside work subject to all weather conditions. Hazards include noise vibrations, vehicle traffic moving equipment, slippery or sloped surfaces, sharp objects including broken glass, flying debris, dust, pollen, poorly ventilated areas, confined spaces, and contact with poisonous snakes, insects, and vegetation. SIGNIFICANT RESPONSIBILITIES May be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays as necessary. May be required to work "On-Call" Work involves proficient use of a wide variety of hand and power tools. May fill in for Crew Supervisor in their absence. SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES None PHYSICAL DEMANDS The work is heavy work which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Repetitive motion, sitting, standing, and walking. Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. Required close visual acuity to perform activities like viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading. WORK ENVIRONMENT Work is performed primarily outdoors where exposure to dust, dirt, fumes, and noise is typically encountered. Full time jobs are provided Benefits.
