Posting Details Position Information Position Title Environmental Health and Safety Compliance Manager Position Summary This position is responsible for managing the Environmental Health and Safety Program for the College. This includes providing training and oversight to all College departments and community constituents in areas pertaining to government regulated and general day-to-day environmental health and safety matters. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Essential Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: 1. Design, develop, and deploy both general and specialized safety, chemical and environmental health related training courses in formats, which include, but are not limited to, classroom, online, and self-study modules. a. Maintain up-to-date safety training materials and training records for students, faculty, and staff campus wide. b. Coordinate with HR to provide training for new hires who will be working areas with specific safety concerns (i.e. physical plant, Science Center, Innovation Lab, etc.). c. Collaborate with faculty on curricular activities that require specialized safety training and oversite. 2. Maintain proper health, safety, and environmental records and documentation in compliance with the requirements of Federal, State, and local regulations. 3. Design, arrange, and perform safety, health and environmental audits on all campus facilities. a. Audit each campus building semi-annually and report findings within 2-weeks of the audit. b. Provide guidance and training for addressing areas of concern outlined in the audit report. c. Acts as campus liaison for regulatory visits and inspections performed by external and governmental groups. 4. Ensure compliance with government policies and procedures as it relates to the safe use, acquisition, and storage of chemicals. a. Oversee the management of the chemical inventory database, coordinate annual inventory of all chemicals housed on campus, and maintain all disposal manifests. b. Ensure that individual departments maintain updated SDS's books of all chemicals and biological agents acquired. c. Provide guidance to campus constituents for the procurement and storage of chemicals (including dual and restricted use chemicals) and non-standard and hazardous biological agents. d. Oversee the proper use, storage, and disposal of all chemicals and hazardous materials throughout the campus. e. Implement standardized operating procedures for the acquisition and use of all regulated chemical and procedures as stipulated by the EPA. f. Work collaboratively with departments generating waste to coordinate all waste disposal with outside contractors. 5. Assist in developing a comprehensive spill prevention and response programs. a. Provide technical assistance in the event of a hazardous chemical spill by identifying the pollutant, determining the hazardous impact and recommending corrective action. b. Coordinates interaction with an external HAZMAT vendor. c. Investigate chemical accidents and prepare incident reports in conjunction with the College Public Safety Department. d. Prepare reports concerning spills for submittal to the College Safety Committee. 6. Inspect, procure, and maintain campus safety equipment to include AED units, first aid kits, and spill kits for laboratories and administrative offices. 7. Attend construction meetings and provide input on environmental compliance, health and safety issues. 8. Sustain and help establish recycling programs around campus with FMS and environmental student groups. 9. Act as liaison to the Center for Laboratory Animal Research at Morehouse School of Medicine, in regard to safety matters. 10. Act as liaison to the Center for Radiation Safety at Morehouse School of Medicine. 11. Provide on call support to the College for emergency environmental management. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in natural science discipline required; Three or more years of hazardous materials management experience and/or training or an equivalent combination of education and experience are required. Extensive OSHA, EPA and DOT training required. The duties of this position require the ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports and legal documents. Also important is the ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from faculty, staff, students, regulatory agencies, or other individuals related to the management of hazardous materials. The incumbent must have the ability to write articles for distribution to the College community and be able to clearly and accurately communicate information to all constituents. To perform this job successfully, an individual must have intermediate skills using Microsoft Office Suite (Access, PowerPoint, Word, and Excel) and utilizing and managing databases. The incumbent must be able to create such things as general correspondence, reports, memos, and spreadsheets with formulas. Ability to utilize e-mail systems such as Lotus Notes/Outlook is also required. Preferred Qualifications Master's degree preferred. Certifications, Licenses, Restrictions Some OSHA Certifications are required. Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM)/Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or equivalent certification is required. Physical Demands The employee is occasionally required to: lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Additionally, in order to compare data, the incumbent must shift gaze from viewing a computer monitor at a distance of several feet to forms that are closer.
