Position Title: Billing Specialist Department: Operations > Business Office Reports to: Lead Billing Specialist EEO Code: Administrative Support Workers SOC Code: Billing and Posting Clerks FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Last Revision Date: September 21, 2020 Position Summary The Billing Specialist is responsible for collecting, posting, and managing patient account payments. Responsible for submitting patient claims to insurance companies and following up on the claims with insurance companies. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Post all payments, adjustments, and other information daily Balance posted batches in billing system to daily receipts and supporting documents (remittance advices) Reconciliation of deposit receipts and adjustments to payments and adjustments posted to billing software, printing and mailing paper claims as required, Verifies accuracy of billing data, correcting any errors. Understanding of Medical Terminology, ICD-9/10 codes, HCPC codes with emphasis on orthopedics (hand) Correcting and resubmitting claims to third party payers Preparing, reviewing, and sending patient statements Answering questions from patients, clerical staff, and insurance companies Identify workflow inefficiencies that can be enhanced by system automation Complete other duties as assigned Required Skills and Abilities Ability to operate a computer, computer software, and basic office equipment Knowledge of medical billing/collection practice Understanding a variety of different Explanation of Benefits Ability to work and thrive in pressure situations Basic math, bookkeeping and accounting skills Ability to work independently and to produce prompt, accurate reports. Exceptional time management Aptitude to be cross trained and learn other business office positions Ability to learn required software applications Education and Experience Previous medical billing experience in hospital or other health care setting Experience working with medical payers Physical Demands and Work Environment The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.
