Salary: $22.79 - $29.17 Hourly Location : Throughout Poway Unified School District, CA Job Type: Full Time Job Number: Site/Dept: District-wide Opening Date: 08/27/2024 Closing Date: 11/27/2024 4:00 PM Pacific Number of Working Months: 9.5 Description *PLEASE NOTE: THIS RECRUITMENT IS FOR Substitute/Limited Term Senior Lifeguards* **THIS POSITION DOES NOT INCLUDE BENEFITS, AS IT IS A SUBSTITUTE/LIMITED TERM POSITION** Placement on the limited term (substitute) list does not qualify candidates for consideration for contracted positions or placement on a contracted eligibility list. ** **The starting rate for new applicants to PUSD for this position is step one on the appropriate salary schedule.** *Shifts are generally 7:30am - 4:00pm* BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of the Aquatics Coordinator, with the assistance of an Assistant Principal as a site liaison, the Senior Lifeguard will monitor the day-to-day operations, ensure healthy and safe conditions for physical education, provide general and preventative maintenance, and other programs of a high school aquatics facility; assist in implementing aquatic programs and activities to meet the needs of the school, district and community; observe students and staff at an assigned swimming pool and adjacent facilities;, instructional programs, swim lessons, lap swim and special events; perform minor maintenance and periodic water testing activities. This classification provides direct academic support to students and teachers which supports teaching and learning along with summer community programs. Examples of Duties REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: Monitor the day-to-day operations, general and preventative maintenance, and other programs of a high school aquatics facility. Act as lifeguard during school hours and at all events held at the pool during school hours ensuring the health and safety of all participants at all times. Assist in planning and implementing aquatic programs and activities to meet the needs of the school, district and community. Implement and enforce PUSD policies, rules, and procedures. Implement and assist with swimming instruction to students; provide instructional assistance to physical education teachers with swim classes as directed/requested. Respond to emergency situations as required; perform first aid to injuries according to established American Red Cross procedures and Perform emergency procedures while adhering to District and County protocol, American Red Cross policies and procedures, including removing victim from water; first aid, rescue breathing, CPR and completing accident reports. Monitor facility use; open, close, and secure buildings and assist in the supervision and preparation of the facility and amenities for school use. (e.g. - pool covers, chemical checks, etc.) Clean pool facility (e.g. brush sides of the pool, vacuum the pool, etc.) as needed/requested for the purpose of maintaining a sanitary and safe condition. Perform basic cleaning duties related to aquatic facility, the pool deck, storage, office, and locker rooms/bathrooms, etc. Maintain program records and prepare reports as required. Monitor swimming pool grounds for the purpose of ensuring the safety and welfare of students. Make recommendations regarding necessary equipment and supplies. Document all incidents involving injury, behavioral problems, and/or any unusual event; communicate as appropriate to supervisor, parent, and others Assist in planning, attend, and participate in all mandatory staff meetings and trainings. Assist other personnel as may be required for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and effective work environment Act as lifeguard/swim instructor during pool hours and at all events held at the pool, ensuring the health and safety of all participants at all times. Collaborate with Aquatics Coordinator to plan, implement, lead, and conduct diverse recreation activities including swim lessons, lap swim, water oriented games, water exercise, and a junior lifeguard program, along with other seasonal summer activities as directed/requested. Address any concerns the staff and parents have regarding the classes or programs. Instruct swimming lessons for participants of all ages. Assess swim lesson participants and makes recommendations on correct class placements. Serve as the point of contact for parents regarding the progression of their child in swim lessons and addresses any concerns the parents have regarding the classes and program. Serve as the point of contact for WSI/lifeguard staff daily to addresses any concerns or scheduling conflicts. Assist in planning, attend, and participate in all mandatory staff meetings and trainings. Perform related duties as assigned as they relate to this classification. Minimum Qualifications EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and two years related lifeguarding experience, including one year experience teaching swimming lessons. Assist in general and preventative maintenance and programs of a high school aquatics facility. Assist in implementing aquatic programs and activities to meet the needs of the school, district and community. Monitor daily operation of aquatic facility for the school, district and community. Observe health and safety regulations. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and two years related lifeguarding experience including one year experience teaching swimming lessons. WORKING CONDITIONS: ENVIRONMENT: Employees work outdoors and are exposed to variable weather conditions. May be exposed to chlorine, acids, and other chemicals at aquatics facilities, as well as blood and body fluids when rendering first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must possess the ability to perform work that may involve lifting children through adults, in and out of the pool up to 150 pounds or more with assistance, pulling a cover over the pool surface with assistance, and lifting, straightening and moving pool deck furniture and equipment. Need the mobility to stand, stoop, reach, bend, climb, and swim, while in swimwear. Must be in good physical condition to stay in water for prolonged periods of time, work in the extreme heat and/or cold, and the outdoors. Vision, which may be corrected; and hearing, which must be in a normal range as measured by a standard audiogram, should be good enough to see and hear adults and children in life and/or health safety endangering situations. Must also possess the mobility to work in an office setting and use standard office equipment, including a computer; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard, typewriter keyboard, or calculator and to operate standard office and duplicating equipment and cash register. Positions in this classification occasionally bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and push and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information. HAZARDS: Contact with blood and other body fluids.
