Summary: The Morning Call is seeking an ambitious general assignment reporter to cover the fast-growing and diverse Lehigh County region of eastern Pennsylvania. This person will juggle breaking and trending news with enterprise pieces, covering a range of topics from development and quality of life, to local schools and education, to local government accountability. We are looking for someone scrappy who can break news, write authoritatively and craft stories that our readers can't get anywhere else in a highly competitive media market. The Morning Call is known for its outstanding journalism, and our journalists have gone on to work for The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Baltimore Sun and other high-profile publications. The position is remote but must be local to the Lehigh Valley region. What you will do: Work collaboratively with editors, other reporters and visual journalists to tell impactful stories across all platforms that engage and retain subscribers and readers Report and write quickly and effectively to break news online; follow up when appropriate with more in-depth pieces Employ creativity daily to develop story ideas, produce or obtain visuals, get sources to cooperate, corroborate facts and present information in the most compelling way Cultivate beats, where appropriate, and develop sources Use public documents and data to tell stories and hold those in power accountable Maximize audience engagement through use of various storytelling formats, including explainers, Q&As, lists, data visualizations, photo galleries, video, etc. Utilize metrics to evaluate what content is engaging our audience, and use that data to inform coverage choices Use SEO best practices to ensure readers are finding your stories via Search Work closely with visual journalists to provide clear explanations of assignments, and shoot your own photos and videos as necessary Maintain an active social media presence, using various platforms to develop sources and story ideas while also promoting your content Shift gears as needed, juggling quick-hit, short-term and long-term assignments simultaneously Deliver on time with minimal to moderate supervision and editing What you will bring: College degree or equivalent experience Solid news judgment Digital and social media skills, with an understanding of SEO and metrics Writing, grammar, AP style and communication skills Spanish language proficiency, enabling you to conduct interviews and engage with Spanish-speaking sources, is a plus Ability to produce content quickly and accurately Skilled in developing sources and cultivating expertise in your coverage area Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team Eagerness to learn and develop new skills Flexibility to work occasional night and weekend shifts Valid driver's license and reliable transportation required Who we are: The Morning Call is a Tribune Publishing newspaper, located in the thriving Lehigh Valley, the third-most populous region in the state, 60 miles north of Philadelphia and 90 miles west of New York City.
