Today, 90 City Year Boston AmeriCorps members serve nearly 10,000 students across 17 schools in Boston, Everett, and Malden Public Schools serving as Student Success Coaches, tutoring, mentoring, and implementing City Year's Whole School, Whole Child program in schools that have been historically under-resourced. Our research-based program focuses on the early warning indicators that can have the biggest impact on student success in school and career readiness: attendance, social-emotional learning & development, and academic achievement in ELA and math. AmeriCorps members tutor students, serve as an additional resource for teachers in classrooms, and lead after school programs and school-wide initiatives to promote a positive school culture. They receive more than 300 hours of professional training to support teachers and staff in delivering instruction and intervention services that is responsive to the diverse racial, cultural, and linguistic needs of the youth we serve. Younger than the teacher but older than students, City Year AmeriCorps members are uniquely positioned to form strong bonds with students and help them succeed. City Year Boston Impact City Year Boston has operated our flagship Whole School Whole Child program in Greater Boston schools for over 15 years, placing over 3,000 AmeriCorps members in public schools, providing over 30,000 students with individual academic support and benefiting over 200,000 students through whole-school initiatives Our work draws on proven best practices. We have conducted several formal program evaluations, and there is substantial evidence demonstrating that our program model works to accelerate academic and developmental progress for students. This research includes a study conducted by the Northwest Evaluation Association that found students working with City Year demonstrated 40% more growth in math and 50% more growth in literacy than their peers; a Policy Studies Associates study that found that schools that partner with City Year were two times more likely in math and three times more likely in English to improve on assessments, with students gaining the equivalent of one month's additional learning each year; and a 2020 study by Johns Hopkins University that found that City Year's Focus List students are 42% less likely to be off track in English, 33% less likely to be behind in math, and 41% less likely to be off track in attendance, gains that are similar to a 2-4 month increase in academic growth in terms of grades and test scores.
