About the City Woodinville, Washington is a premier tourist destination with a population of about 14,000 though the city is growing. This growth is causing lots of exciting projects to work on. Located about 20 miles northeast of Seattle, Woodinville offers the benefits of a bustling urban area against the backdrop of the picturesque Sammamish River Valley. Woodinville is known for its tourism industries with over 120 wineries, breweries, and distilleries and many opportunities for outdoor activities. It's a great place to work and we manage to do a lot with only about 50 employees, including planning, permitting, code enforcement, street/storm water maintenance, infrastructure construction and maintenance, parks, and general administrative services. Position Summary Under the supervision of the Assistant to the City Manager, the Community Engagement Coordinator performs a variety of professional level community relations work, exercising independent judgment to ensure that robust, equitable, and inclusive community engagement is at the forefront of the work the city does and to ensure effective communication with the community regarding City functions, programs, and related matters, including sensitive and/or controversial matters. The position will aim to improve engagement with and by the community, including underrepresented populations by creating forums for community members to regularly interact with city representatives to promote expression of diversity of viewpoints, collaboration, and partnership. Essential Functions 1. Cultivate community contacts and develop collaborative relations with members of the community and representatives of community groups. 2. Work collaboratively to create innovative tools and resources to support City services and lead projects that enable diverse and inclusive engagement and input. 3. Serve as a resource for City employees and departments in matters relating to outreach, community engagement and delivery of inclusive services and programs; assist City departments to enhance public outreach efforts to broaden public participation on varied City initiatives, projects, and planning. 4. Manage the City's Community grant program and provide support and guidance to awarded applicants. 5. Plan, organize, and coordinate/facilitate special events, meetings, community forums, workshops, projects, exhibits, and other activities to reach audiences of all backgrounds in a way that serves their unique needs. 6. Take a lead role in the direction of city-wide public information and marketing programs, including city publications, cable television channel, events, news releases, production of the city newsletter; notification of City projects and community workshops; and managing City communications regarding sensitive and/or confidential matters that may have budgetary, legal, or other strategic implications. 7. Maintains related webpages and social media accounts. 8. Serve as liaison for the City by participating in public meetings, making presentations to various groups, and providing information concerning the City's business; monitor current events and issues that may impact the City. 9. Recommend and coordinate programs to encourage participation in City decision-making processes; ensures outreach to impacted community groups and identifies opportunities for involvement. 10. Assist in improving customer-facing elements of City business, including creating informational materials and identifying, from the customers perspective, barriers in service delivery processes. 11. Establish and maintain effective relations with City staff, Council and outside organizations and citizens; assist in the administration of the customer service requests. 12. Conducts program specific surveys and collects demographic data for analysis. 13. Monitors and tracks expenditures incurred as a result of providing services or initiatives to compile data and reports. 14. Perform other duties as required or assigned. Other Job Functions This position is characterized by competence in community relations which includes responsibility for highly controversial, sensitive and/or complex assignments involving conflicting community interests and/or potential for significant financial or political impact and the ability to exercise independent judgement on such matters to reach a resolution. Employees assigned to this level typically work at a more strategic level in soliciting public input and involvement in important and/or sensitive issues and developing collaborative relationships in the community to effect positive change. Minimum Qualifications + Job Demands JOB DEMANDS: Work is primarily performed in an indoor office setting for nine hours per day with regular off-site activities requiring the operation of a motorized vehicle. Physical effort is needed to lift and carry office supplies and materials. Mobility is needed to attend various meetings. While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent must regularly talk, hear, and see when communicating with the public and employees; frequently sit, and occasionally stand and walk. Must have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines. Will likely be required to work beyond normal office hours for evening and weekend meetings. Necessary aptitudes include understanding instructions, reason to make judgments; numeric aptitude; problem solving and analytic abilities; initiative, ingenuity, and imagination; and memory and concentration. Patience and persuasiveness are needed when interacting with others. Requires strong verbal aptitude, excellent writing, and public speaking ability. Establish and maintain effective working relationships. Contribute to the strategic planning process. Prepare reports, correspondence and communicate effectively in written and verbal form. Write clear and interesting news releases, articles, stories, and other educational and promotional material. Interact well with other employees, citizens, citizen groups, representatives of other cities, and government agencies Accept responsibility and be held accountable. Coordinate multiple activities simultaneously; adapt to change and remain flexible. Exercise good judgment. Interact professionally with various levels of elected and administrative officials, special interest groups, general public, and City employees. Training and Experience : Bachelor's degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, Communications, Political Science, or related field; and two years of professional experience working with community-based programs or with community organizations. Experience in the public sector is also desired. Must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Washington State driver's license. This position also will work 80 hours within nine days as opposed to the typical 10 workday period; in short, every other Friday off! This position is fully benefitted with health, dental, vision, and life insurances/coverages, along with paid vacation leave, sick leave, and holidays. If insuring a spouse and two or more dependents, most City employees pay about $150 or less per month out-of-pocket for full coverage ; out-of-pocket costs may be lower based on coverage/plan choices. The City's generous retirement package also gives you more control over your money . Instead of participating in Social Security, the City participates in "Social Security In-Lieu Program" (Municipal Employees Benefit Trust) in which the City contributes an amount equivalent to 6.2% of gross wages and the employee contributes another 6.2% of their wages. In addition, the City also offers the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS), which is a traditional, defined-benefit pension plan - when you meet plan requirements and retire, you are guaranteed a certain monthly income for the rest of your life based on years of service and compensation. 457 accounts are also available with Roth (post-tax) and traditional (pre-tax) contributions allowed. Regular employees receive 11 paid holidays per year and earn 8 hours per month for sick leave. During 2024, the City is paying a Retention Bonus to those employees that meet the terms of the benefit. The bonus is calculated on the base salary for the prior quarter at a rate of 3.0%. If an employee is hired during the quarter, the amount will be prorated.
