Reporting to the AVP of Alternative Distribution, the Managing Director will provide direct underwriting leadership, sales leadership, and agency management for the Middle Market Underwriting Center (MMUC). Responsibilities will include: Sales, Agency, and Underwriting Management Ensuring functional and regulatory integrity of the book of business as well as overall compliance with The Hartford's guidelines, policies, service standards and levels of authority. Strong agency engagement in territory through high visibility for a large aggregator and agency plant. Co travel and coach Underwriters in the performance of their roles to ensure consistent practice of Sales Excellence discipline and cross-sell across MLC & Global Specialty. Build strong, distinctive strategic partnerships with key agents. Develop and implement segment sales plans. Garner keen insight into competitors' strengths, weaknesses, and strategies to leverage for profitable business and increased agency penetration. Lead a countrywide agency relationship, connecting with key employees at all levels of the organization. Strong One Hartford connectivity; cross-marketing internally with other MLC units, Small Commercial, and Global Specialty. Underwriting Execution Responsible for ensuring core Underwriting execution in accordance with guidelines and direction in partnership with referral team. Ensuring underwriting health for the MMUC book in accordance with quality and compliance guidelines Monitors risk selection & pricing on the territory portfolio to ensure profitable financial returns. Acts as subject matter expert and provides guidance on coverage, pricing, program structures and services offered. Enforces utilization of all Underwriting tools (ADAPT, CUE, Policy Center, Salesforce, Net Rate Planning Tool, etc.) Demonstrates masterly level understanding and utilization of Underwriting & Sales reports. Promotes utilization of services: Claims and Risk Engineering Middle Market Underwriting Operations Inspires team to achieve operating plan objectives through proper risk selection, adequate individual account and portfolio for pricing, mix of business, flow of business and management of quality analysis for the team. Driving consistency in underwriting routines and accountabilities that deliver proven results. These include pipeline & agency management and renewal retention strategies. People Leadership and Development Attracts, selects, pipelines, and develops high caliber talent from within and outside of the organization. Ensures staff continuity for key positions by anticipating and planning for future staffing needs. Effectively manages staff through active performance management, implementation of a meaningful development process; builds a strong team which fosters collaboration, open dialogue and involves them in critical decision making and planning activities. Closely manages plan results on an office wide, divisional, and individual basis and directs implementation of specific actions to address business shortfalls in both profit and growth. We are looking for a highly motivated candidate who will drive Sales, Marketing, Profit, Growth, and Quality of Middle Market main street agent business. The Managing Director leads the execution of the Middle Market Strategic and Operating plans within the Northeast Division local market territories through strong agency/territorial management and leading a high-performance team focused on achievement, commitment and innovation, requiring a deep understanding of local market and competitors. Qualifications: 8+ years multi-line carrier underwriting experience in P&C Middle Market preferred 2+ years of experience managing middle market underwriters preferred. Strong sales experience including articulating Hartford's value proposition, differentiators, product knowledge, closing of risks, and negotiation skills. Must be talented at speaking in front of groups at all levels of an organization. Agency territorial management experience and strong relationships in the Northeastern markets are a plus Must reside in the Northeastern Division territory Solid financial / business acumen and skills Proven track record of setting goals and delivering results. Ability to embrace, develop and execute change management 50% of role will be traveling in territory Demonstrated ability to execute business plans and achieve results. CPCU or CIC coursework preferred Bachelor's degree preferred Location: This role will have a Hybrid work arrangement, with the expectation of working in an office (Hartford, CT; Boston, MA; Clinton, NY; Morristown, NJ; New York, NY; or King of Prussia, PA) 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday). Compensation The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition.
