Learn more about the UC Office of the President DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW UC Legal - Office of the General Counsel (UCL) provides legal services to the university, including representation, advice, research and training. We also provide legal opinions to the Board of Regents, administration, faculty, staff and others acting on the university's behalf. We report jointly to the Board of Regents and the president. Position Summary Receives general instructions from supervising attorney and exercises judgment in selecting methods and techniques for legal research. Uses skills as a seasoned, experienced legal professional to resolve a diverse range of research and other legal related assignments. Works on moderate to complex legal research projects of diverse scope. Key Responsibilities * 50% Coordinate, analyze and assist with litigation and claims arising at the UC campuses and medical centers, including developing case strategy and other problem-solving strategies. Perform document reviews in response to subpoenas, discovery requests and California Public Records Act requests for privilege that includes identifying, preserving, collecting, processing utilizing key-term (Boolean) searches and producing electronically stored information ("ESI") and paper documents utilizing eDiscovery software such as Logikcull and/or Relativity platforms. * 20% Assist counsel with identifying and reviewing relevant documents and the preparation and production of exhibits relating to internal administrative hearings. * 10% Provide summaries, analyses, recommendations and positions to clients, outside counsel and OGC attorneys including reviewing new litigation matters and draft summaries to counsel providing information such as the nature of the case and causes of action alleged to aide in selecting appropriate outside counsel to represent the client. * 10% Performs initial review of discovery responses with summaries to counsel. Conducts legal research and fact-finding of an in-depth nature that may have broad scope, to include fact gathering and retrieval of information. * 10% Support counsel and Senior Paralegals in project management and reporting of litigation areas including Professional Liability, General Liability and Employment Liability. Experience Required Qualifications * Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience Preferred Qualifications * Minimum of 2 years of Litigation experience Skills and Abilities Required Qualifications * In-depth knowledge in one or more legal practice areas. Preferred Qualifications * Working knowledge of UC processes, protocols and procedures. * Knowledge of eDiscovery software such as Relativity and/or Logikcull * Strong analytical / problem-solving skills. * Strong communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of staff; both verbally and in writing. * Strong project management and data organization skills. * Strong skills in research and analyzing / synthesizing large amounts of data. * Ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes. * Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality. Education Required Qualifications * Associate degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training Licenses and Certifications Preferred Qualifications * Paralegal certification preferred. SPECIAL CONDITIONS This position has been approved for a hybrid work arrangement. A new hire will be required to report to work onsite in Oakland, CA at least 2 days per week (currently Tuesday and Wednesday). Remote candidates residing in or willing to relocate to California may be considered. SALARY AND BENEFITS Job Title: Paralegal 3 Job Code: Salary Grade: Grade 22 Payscale: $44.54 - $50.77/hour (approximately $93,000 - $106,000 annual), commensurate with experience Full Salary Range: $77,600 - $140,400 The University of California, Office of the President, is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range shows the growth potential for this position and the pay scale is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position.
