Reporting to the VC-CFO, Information Technology Services (ITS) delivers Enterprise information technology services to the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) under the leadership of the campus Chief Information Officer (CIO). Information Technology Services (IT Services) uses world-class services and technologies to empower UC San Diego's mission to transform California and the world as a student-centered, research-focused, service-oriented public university. POSITION OVERVIEW: Under the general direction of the Director of ITS/Educational Infrastructure Services (EIS), with input from and in close coordination with IT Services' AI and Data Science/Machine Learning Platform (DSMLP) service owners, architects, and development/operations teams, this position is responsible for managing IT Services' AI/Machine Learning applications (e.g. "TritonGPT") and infrastructure within DSMLP and other ITS platforms, including planning, deployment, configuration, operations, monitoring, tuning, and problem resolution/debugging. This position's duties span the full technology stack: application and library deployment; operating systems installation and patching; database configuration and tuning; Kubernetes and container operations; networking and storage design and management; and occasional integration and middle-ware programming in languages such as Python or Bash/shell. In collaboration with colleagues in EIS and elsewhere in ITS, this position will also assist with operational management of EIS' broader academic and administrative Linux portfolio, including clusters, computer labs, remote-access, and remote-desktop services; and serve as a technical leader contributing to evolving architecture and innovation within these platforms' common technical foundation. Responsibilities: Administration, enhancement, operational, and technical support of UC San Diego's suite of AI assistants, collectively known as TritonGPT. Linux operating systems installation and patching, database configuration and performance tuning, and networking/storage design and management of infrastructure supporting artificial intelligence and machine learning services. Kubernetes cluster configuration and administration for the automated deployment, scaling, and management of containerized applications. Coding and integration of middleware software utilizing common programming/scripting languages. Provide support for a broad suite of Linux-based academic and administrative portfolio of services. Technical leadership through participation in strategic planning and by driving innovation. QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training. Advanced knowledge of Linux/UNIX operating systems and programming environments, including software installations, automation, troubleshooting, security, makefiles, scripting tools, and revision control. Advanced knowledge in container orchestration including designing and implementing Kubernetes clusters, container networking, security, system and application workloads deployments. Advanced skills creating, building and debugging container images, and solid knowledge of internal architecture of container execution platforms such as Docker and CRI. Knowledge of and experience configuring, using, and developing against Machine Learning frameworks (PyTorch, Tensorflow) and diverse neural network architectures (e.g., Deep/multilayer), for production training, fine tuning, and inference workloads. Experience with complex multi-platform troubleshooting in a multi-platform environment. Ability to locate and understand logs in a multi-platform environment, within managed interfaces such as Splunk as well as through native Unix command line tools. Experience building, maintaining, and debugging integrations, middleware and small applications written in Python, Bash/shell, and other scripted languages. Experience designing and operating continuous-integration, continuous-deployment (CI/CD) pipelines as well as traditional software deployment regimes. Advanced knowledge of computer security best practices and policies including demonstrated experience securing most complex server-based software. SPECIAL CONDITIONS Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on background check results. Employee must be available to work evenings and weekends. Pay Transparency Act Annual Full Pay Range: $104,900 - $198,900 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%) Hourly Equivalent: $50.24 - $95.26 Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
