Microsoft's Cloud Operations and Innovation (CO+I) team builds and operates Microsoft datacenters, which in turn power Microsoft's cloud business. The CO+I Engineering team (CO+IE) delivers services, applications, and automation supporting datacenter planning, construction, and operation. We own a large portfolio of services, including workflows that enable predicable, lowest cost datacenter construction, telemetry systems that drive high availability and optimized energy usage, and task and performance management applications that help our operation run as efficiently as possible. We are looking for a passionate and self-driven Principal Software Engineering Lead to lead the team of Software Engineers, work with data center operation organizations and engineering partner teams to enable the next generation of data center operation with cutting edge features and technology, and make sure it matches the ever-growing cloud computation demands. This role is located in one or all hub locations - Atlanta, GA, Washington, D.C., Redmond, WA, San Antonio, TX or Phoenix, AZ. Relocation support will be provided, and successful candidates must relocate or reisde within 50 miles of the hub office location. This role is eligible for hybrid or remote work, up to 100%. Responsibilities • Leads and manages a team of full stack Software Engineers, fostering an inclusive, collaborative and high-impact team culture. • Collaborates with cross-functional teams, business stakeholders and engineering partners to determine and clarify business requirements and priorities for data center operation scenarios. • Partners with product management teams, leverages subject-matter expertise, and drives project development and delivery plans; manages team sprint planning, scrums, and retrospectives to ensure timely deliveries of team commitments. • Leads the team to drive software engineering and infrastructural designs of CO+I data center operation tooling. • Coaches and leads the team by example to create and maintain extensible, reliable, reusable, high-performance, and secure code. • Guides the team on defining operation excellence and on-call best practices, developing and following playbooks and trouble shooting guides (TSGs), developing and deploying service health monitors and alerts for service degradation, interruptions and outages, and performing root cause analysis (RCAs) to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future. • Promotes and leads by example on growth mindset, proactively seeks new knowledge and adapts to new trends, technical solutions, and patterns that will improve the availability, reliability, efficiency, observability, and performance of services, while also driving consistency in operations at scale. • Mentors and develops team members, provides guidance and opportunities for career growth and professional development. Qualifications Required/ Minimum Qualifications: • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python o OR equivalent experience. • 4+ years people management and working experience building scalable, reliable, distributed systems. • Solid analytical skills and an ability to abstract concepts and think in terms of OO design. • Experience of building and retaining software engineering talents, coaching and mentoring for team members' career growth, and fostering supportive, respectful, and inclusive team cultures. Other requirements: Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter. Preferred/ Additional Qualifications: • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 10+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python o OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python o OR equivalent experience. • 4+ years people management experience. • 5+ years of working experience in large scale system architecting, design, development, testing, and release, including but not limited to web applications, microservices in layers, database design, API design, performance tuning, telemetry design and analysis. • 3+ years of working experience in cloud-based services (Azure or AWS). • 3+ years of working experience in modern web framework such as Angular, React, or Vue. • 3+ years of experience in DevOps, GIT, Build and Release(CI/CD) automation. • Solid design skills and hands on experience with modern software system design, principles, architectural styles, and usage trade-offs. • Experience of leading big initiatives spanning multiple teams and organizations and leveraging deep domain expertise to influence product roadmap. • Experience dealing with geographically diverse teams is a big plus. • Solid learning, problem solving and collaboration skills. • Solid verbal and written communication skills. • Data-driven mind-set. Ability to mine data and persuade your team using effective analysis. Software Engineering M5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 - $267,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,400 - $294,000 per year.
