Job Summary: Supervising Janitors oversee the work of custodial staff, ensuring that buildings remain clean and that all maintenance concerns are taken care of in a timely manner. In addition to scheduling staff members, Supervising Janitors track inventory and ensure machines are working efficiently and that parts are repaired or replaced as necessary. Essential Functions: Plans and schedules staff assignments and cleaning services; re-assigns staff to ensure that work is accomplished according to schedule, and that staff is fully utilized; and shifts personnel to handle emergency cleaning, maintenance, and care projects. Performs the full range of supervisory duties such as interviewing and selecting staff; establishing training standards and training new employees; resolving personnel problems; evaluating work performance and taking appropriate disciplinary action. Approves requests for leave, audit and approve timecards. Recommends retention or termination of employees. Ensures the efficient and effective use of time by the staff by such means as enforcing the attendance rules, resolving disciplinary problems, and meeting established work schedules. Supervises personnel which typically includes recommendations for hiring, firing, performance evaluation, training, work allocation, and problem resolution. Prepares and reviews work orders and orders necessary supplies, chemicals, and materials. Maintains records on employees, equipment, and maintenance activities. Organizes workload to ensure deadlines are met and schedules work assignments in order of priority. Evaluates work performance against acceptable standards by review of reports, discussions with supervisors and personal observation. Completes assignments from Footprints in a timely manner. Custodial/Equipment Maintenance: Assists in ordering, care, maintenance, and utilization of department equipment, supplies, keys, and inventories. Inspects work areas to ensure consistency and quality of work and adherence to established procedures, safety regulations, and infection control standards. Oversees and assists with snow removal activities. Inspects buildings and assigned areas for compliance with cleaning guidelines; and investigates complaints of unsatisfactory cleaning performance and takes corrective action. Functional and Supervisory Relationships: The Supervising Janitor reports to the Head Janitor and supervises up to 20 subordinate positions. Under general direction, oversees the daily activities of Janitors and Cleaners, including personnel assignment, training and management, quality assurance, and inventory control. Operating Needs: Qualified candidates for this position must have the ability to read and write. Ability to work holidays, overtime and shift work if needed. Ability to work University special events. Valid NYS Driver License. Working Environment: Requires repetitive physical work; lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects over 25 pounds. Work environment involves some exposure to chemicals which require following basic safety precautions. Minimum Qualifications: Candidates must have permanent appointment in a Supervising Janitor classified position (or be eligible for transfer). OR be reachable for appointment on the current NY State Civil Service canvass list for Supervising Janitor - Brockport location, Full-time. NY HELPS Open-Competitive: You must have two years of satisfactory full-time experience in the custodial care or cleaning of buildings, offices, or institutional residences of which one year of the experience must have been at a supervisory level. Non-Qualifying Experience: Experience limited to the cleaning or care of private residences is NOT qualifying. Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge of supplies, equipment, and/or services ordering and inventory control. Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications. Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities. Ability to foster a cooperative work environment. Knowledge of green clean products and processes. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; 10:30pm - 7:00am Salary, Benefits and Appointment: $46,306 May be benefits eligible; Find out more about benefits at Careers@Brockport! This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship. This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title maybe filled via a noncompetitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply. At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.
