Department Overview The OHSU Clinical registered nurse (RN) provides compassionate, evidence-based, and efficient care to individuals, families, communities and patient populations. Department Summary: The Department of Neurology and its affiliated practices comprise a multi-location interdisciplinary Neurology practice that include the following subspecialty groups that span over clinical and research efforts: General Neurology - OHSU and Hillsboro Medical Center (HMC) Residents Clinic (Continuity Clinic for Residents seeing General Neurology patients) Layton Aging and Alzheimer's Disease Center Neurology Wellness Clinic ALS and Neuromuscular Disorders Comprehensive Epilepsy Center Headache Center Multiple Sclerosis Clinic Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders Program Oregon Stroke Center Sleep Program Department Specific Working Conditions: The Registered Nurse position involves remote and clinic duties (hybrid position) responsible for active care management of patients. This includes but is not limited to, supporting clinics, educating and counseling patients, participating in multidisciplinary care planning, triage patient calls to providers and provide follow"‘up and on"‘going communication with patients, family members, and care"‘givers. As part of overall duties for patient care management, this position coordinates and helps lead team care initiatives including monthly allied health team meeting between Movement Disorders faculty and the rehab team. Maintains compliance with applicable laws such as client confidentiality, Americans with Disabilities Act, Workers' Compensation, abuse reporting, principles of consent, and advanced medical directives. Advocates for the client/family at the service-delivery level and at the policy-making level fostering the client/family's decision-making, independence, and growth and development. Integrates factors related to quality, safety, efficiency, and cost effectiveness in planning, delivering, monitoring and evaluating client care promoting the most effective and efficient use of human and financial resources. This position will also be involved in the development and coordination of educational events and presentations geared toward patients and families, allied health, and professional education. Provide in-service training to nurses and other healthcare providers on the clinic operations and basics of Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease and other movement disorders in an outpatient clinic setting as requested. Organize and provide team training opportunities within Therapists Aligned in Managing Parkinson's Disease (TEAM-PD) or PD Project ECHO to underserved areas. Represent the OHSU Parkinson Center as Center of Excellence Coordinator with the national Parkinson Foundation, CurePSP, and/or Lewy Body Dementia Association (LBDA). Participates in clinic, department, OHSU campus teams and committees as appropriate and as approved by nurse manager and Movement Disorders program director. Function/Duties of Position I. Scientist A. Evaluates knowledge of self and others: Evaluates own knowledge and nursing practice in relation to professional practice standards and evidence- based knowledge in consultation with peers and colleagues. Evaluates knowledge and nursing practice of peers in relation to professional practice standards and evidence-based knowledge and provides feedback that enhances their growth and development. B. Identifies complexities within OHSU systems and participates in resolving barriers to effective, efficient, and fiscally responsible care delivery. C. Evaluates patient outcomes against nurse-sensitive indicators and participates in raising the standard of nursing practice when results are below benchmark. II. Leader A. Uses an evidence-based decision making process to determine the patient's priority goals and care activities: Gathers pertinent information from patient and others to establish relevant data base about the patient and the patient's condition. Determines changes in the patient's condition and stability based on clinical parameters, population data, and nursing knowledge and evidence. Uses a population and evidence based approach to determine the patient's individualized priority goals and care activities in relation to: Nursing's independent scope of practice (safety, comfort, hygiene, restorative measures, and health promotion); and in relation to the interdisciplinary plan of care Evaluates the effectiveness of the plan of care by evaluating the patient's response, outcomes, and changes in stability and makes recommendations for modifications to the plan of care. B. Speaks up immediately about concerns regarding assigned responsibilities and available resources. III. Practitioner A. Develops a therapeutic relationship with patients and families. B. Assigns and supervises tasks consistent with other caregivers' scope of practice or job responsibilities, adhering to standards, regulations, and role expectations including self-care and collaborative teamwork. C. Implements direct and indirect nursing care consistent with evidence-based practices, healthcare policies and procedures, scope and standards of practice, and Nursing's Code of Ethics. IV. Knowledge Transfer A. Collaborates with the patient/family in developing a teaching plan to meet learning needs. Effectively transfers information about disease, health, treatment plan and recovery to patient, family and documents teaching and plan in the electronic record. B. Communicates evaluation of patient's stability, progress, discharge plan and recommendation for continuity of the medical and nursing plan to other members of the health care team, including accurate and timely documentation in the patient's electronic record. C. Effectively transfers knowledge to other members of the team to support the safety of their practice, while maintaining caring and compassionate relationships with all healthcare team members. Department Specific Skills and Duties Participate in the development of care management principles for patients and families Follows standing orders/protocols in assisting with patient care. Cross coverage of patient care support staff as needed. Supports a team approach to patient care, in coordination with division and clinic leadership. Uses EMR to assist with patient care. Responsible for handling urgent/emergent calls per approved advice protocols. Actively coordinates care for patients as needed to meet sub-specialty specific best practice guidelines Develop appropriate educational programs for patients, families, and healthcare providers to advance best practice care in specialty areas Required Qualifications The qualifications for the position are the minimum requirements to be eligible for an interview. Minimum Requirements for All RNs: Associate Degree of Nursing awarded from a program accredited by Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (CNEA) Current, unencumbered Oregon RN license by 1 week before start date Current BLS certification awarded by the American Heart Association (AHA) or Military Training Network branch of AHA by the start date Job Related knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Communication skills including fluency in oral and written English. Basic computer skills including the ability to send/receive email, navigate information technology associated with the position, and use Electronic Health Record information and tools. Registrations, Certifications and/or Licenses: Current unencumbered Oregon RN license Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association or the Military Training Network Preferred Qualifications Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing Preferred Certified Neuroscience Registered Nurse Certification (CNRN) or other applicable advanced certification preferred Additional Details Working Conditions: Ability to lift, bend, stoop, reach, carry, push, pull and walk throughout the work period. Able to lift 35 lbs independently. Complies with the safe patient mobilization policy when lifting or positioning dependent patients, including using mechanical lifts and coordinating the assistance of other personnel.
