Worker Safety and Environment Intern

Argonne National Laboratory, one of the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) major research centers, is pleased to announce opportunities for college and university graduate and undergraduate students to participate in the Laboratory's ongoing programs. The Worker Safety and Environment team provides day-to-day ESH related support and services to the research and development organizations across Argonne and helps provide a standardization of safety practices across the laboratory. Interns in WSE will develop skills in anticipating, recognizing, evaluating, and managing (including communicating) environmental, safety, and health hazards and risks by 1) understanding the work planning and control system in Argonne (WSE mentoring & qualification journal will be a starting point), 2) shadowing various safety generalists/specialists deployed across the site to perform facility safety inspections and work planning and control reviews, and 3) independently or with minimum support, perform the tasks above and generate a report or work planning and control document. Education and Experience Requirements This opportunity is open to any undergraduate or graduate student with relevant experience who meets the following criteria: •Must be currently enrolled full-time at an accredited institution and have completed at least one semester of schooling by the start of the program. •Must be 18 years or older at the time the appointment begins. •Must possess a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. •If accepting an offer, must pass a screening drug test. •Currently enrolled in an environmental, health and safety related program (ABET accredited preferred) full time. Master students are eligible to apply. Students interested in this position may need additional skill sets: •Fundamental knowledge of Environmental, Safety and Health (ESH) practices. •Ability to listen to and effectively communicate with various researchers and scientists from various scientific disciplines. •Desire to work with and support a broad range of operation support and scientific disciplines. •Proven oral and written skills to effectively communicate problems and solutions to workers and management. •Ability to develop interpersonal relationships with various researchers and scientists. •Openness to exploring work across all operations support and scientific disciplines and other areas that ESH supports.
