Job Description Position Summary: Assists the Supervisor in the daily technical operations of the Hematology Laboratory. Works independently under general direction to address laboratory needs as the occasion arises. Responsible for performing and assessing clinical laboratory tests on specimens for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes in a timely manner. Demonstrates knowledge' of the organization's Service Standards and incorporates them into the performance of Duties. Supervises subordinates in the absence of the Supervisor Principal Responsibilities: I.SUPERVISORY ASSISTANCE Employee training/Technical Assistance with staff Assists with the supervision of the technical staff and provides support to the supervisor. Performance Criteria: a. Assists in monitoring and compliance of organization's Service Standards by laboratory employees. b. Ensures that the Supervisor is kept aware of work situations and the performance of each employee on an on-going basis. c. Trains newly hired technical staff effectively in the procedures of the department and pertinent policies d. Trains new and current employees; oversees the technical performance of new employees during orientation and less qualified personnel assigned to the same area. e. Orient existing employees to new procedures and/ or changes in existing procedures f. Offers continuing guidance and technical assistance to employees on work activities and procedures g. Informs supervisor of problems with equipment, reagent, controls, etc h. Notifies the supervisor when service is needed i. Assists with troubleshooting technical problems by utilizing expertise in the field j. Monitors the work of staff in order to provide clear and accurate feedback to supervisor regarding their performance k. Remind and document employees who are not complying with set standards. l. Provide assistance in drafting and implementing operational standards related to technical aspects of the laboratory. m. Provide assistance in monitoring laboratory productivity; including supervisory review of abnormal and critical results, following up on incompletes, and monitoring turn-around-time. n. Provide mentoring and guidance to employees in the absence of a supervisor. o. Reviews printouts and or reports from assigned areas for technical and clerical accuracy. Brings discrepancies to the attention of the supervisor. p. Maintains technical leadership by providing technical guidance during supervisor's absence, and or holidays. II. LABORATORY SET-UP Processing of Hematology specimen from pre- to post-analytical phase Performance Criteria: a. Receipt of Samples Reviews labels and requisition forms for accuracy of data. Identifies discrepancies between forms and specimen labels. Labels and relabels specimen containers as necessary Centrifuges/ aliquots specimens according to protocol. Prepares samples for distribution. Sorts specimen containers for distribution to .appropriate areas. Identifies and expedites 'STAT' request Records inappropriate requests ~ containing incomplete data and/ or unsuitable specimens. Informs supervisor/lead technologist of problem specimens b. Workstation Performs preventive maintenance of centrifuge and pre-analytical analyzer. Keeps work-bench neat and organized Prepares racks and trays to minimize clutter and ease work transitions III. SPECIMEN PREPARATION AND TESTING Prepares specimens to be tested; Performs manual and automated tests on blood, urine and body fluids according to established laboratory procedures. Performance Criteria: a. Identifies and prepares accurately specimens which have been collected by phlebotomy team, nurses or physicians in according to laboratory policies and procedures. b. Checks samples to ensure correct identification and that it matches with accompanying label to ensure accuracy of recording and reporting of results. c. Enters specimens in laboratory computer or write accurately, neatly and clearly in Manual Accession log. d. Divides specimen when multiple tests are ordered (e.g. CBC and Flow) on same specimen, e. Compiles daily worksheet in accordance with test(s) requested f. Performs serological procedures on body fluids. g. Centrifuges specimens to separate cells from serum h. Completes all scheduled and stat tests in a timely fashion. i. Report any incomplete assignments/tests to assure continuity of procedures. J • Perform all laboratory testing according to the Policy and Procedures k. Maintains accurate and up-to-date maintenance log book in an accurate and timely manner I. Properly document problems and workflow issues as well as corrective action taken m. Ensures that critical reports are communicated and documented as per laboratory Policies and Procedures n. Performs all preventative Maintenance procedures on instruments as stated in the laboratory Policy and Procedures. o. Adheres to Laboratory's/Manufacturers' safety policies while operating and troubleshooting instruments. p. Operates instruments according to Laboratory/ Manufacture's established procedures. TERPRETATION, VERIFICATION, AND RECORDING OF RESULTS Analyzes, interprets, verifies, and reports test results. Performance Criteria: a. Exhibits sound judgment in handling, interpreting, verifying, and reporting test results. b. Verifies the completeness and accuracy of all lab results c. Makes a determination of normal and abnormal test values accurately as per laboratory Policies and Procedures. d. Promptly documents results in the hospital information systems and reports positive or abnormal results immediately to a Physician via telephone. e. Seeks information or ask assistance from supervisor when necessary regarding difficult or questionable results. f. Reviews incomplete test lists g. Notifies technician/technologist responsible for the presence of unverified results in the computer system V.QUALITY CONTROL AND ASSURANCE Monitors testing equipment, solutions and work environment by following laboratory Quality Control procedure to [ ensure the overall reliability of test results. Performance Criteria: a. Perform proficiency testing b. Monitors and coordinates the successful and timely completion of all proficiency testing in the absence of the Supervisor c. Checks the expiration date upon receipt of controls d. Enters or assigns tech to enter control values into data terminal e. Inspects reagents, calibration and control solutions to ensure that they are of high quality, that lot numbers, expiration dates are noted, initialed f. Runs and interprets control values to ensure all values are within the laboratory Quality Control guielines. g. Runs and interprets control values to ensure standardization within deviation guidelines. h. Performs reagent validations, QC validation, and other activities related to laboratory quality i. Performs instrument check procedures j. Cleans and calibrates testing equipment according to established preventive maintenance guidelines. k. . Reads and records temperatures of pertinent pieces of equipment daily. Includes but not limited to refrigerators, freezers I. Adhere to all laboratory infection and safety procedures m. Disposes of needles and sharps in designated red bins n. Stores and disposes of contaminated and hazardous materials according to departmental procedures. o. Troubleshoots malfunctioning equipment and reports any prolonged instrument related problems to the Assistant Supervisor or Supervisor. p. Document all instrument problems and remedial action taken in appropriate log books. q. Communicates with manufacturer's service department dispatch office when unable to rectify inoperable instrument. Receive an ETA and document in shift-to-shift log book VENTORY MANAGEMENT Assist with inventory management Performance Criteria: a. Fallow lab reagent protocol b. Minimize reagent waste c. Monitors inventory of reagents, controls, and disposables d. Informs Supervisors when inventory is low VII.PLANNING AND TIME UTILIZATION Efficiency in adapting to changes in order to facilitate adequate staffing and effective demonstration in identifying and acting on priorities in a timely manner. Performance Criteria: a. Demonstrates alertness and adaptability to changes in schedule and work conditions; responds appropriately. b. Uses time effectively by completing all assigned tasks in a timely manner. c. Recognizes and deals with priorities d. Utilizes spare time to review stored collection of abnormal slides, textbooks, periodicals, tech samples, safety videos, etc to enhance theoretical knowledge and technical skills VIII.EMPLOYEE TRAINING Trains new and current employees Performance Criteria: a. Oversees technical performance of new employees during orientation and less qualified personnel assigned to same area. b. Teaches new employees established procedures and orients existing employees to new or modified procedures c. Remains available during all duty hours for consultation be other laboratory personnel to provide technical advice or assistance d. Provides technical leadership during supervisor's absence and or holidays IX.SENIOR ASSIGNMENTS (TECHNICAL) Ensures adherence to and maintains one of the following areas: safety procedures and technical manuals Performance Criteria: a. Assists in scheduling and making workflow changes as necessary b. Assigns differentials and adjust assignments when necessary to ensure the timely completion of testing c. Prepares work assignments for the next day in the absence of the supervisor d. Prepares weekly work rotation schedule and updates the master schedule in the absence of the supervisor e. Reviews printouts and/ or reports from assigned areas for technical and clerical accuracy f. Monitors daily results for completeness, accuracy, day-to-day precision g. Monitors for trends or transcription errors h. Monitors and coordinates proficiency testing in absence of supervisor; submits results to lab Director for signature i. Maintains a current awareness of techniques in the field j. Ensures compliance with regulatory requirements; brings discrepancies to the attention of the supervisor k. Collects technical information required to ensure a complete and up-to-date record X. TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT Participates in in-services, continuing education courses and complete 12 CE credits per year Performance Criteria: e. Maintains an up to date knowledge of policies and procedures in assigned area and responds to, or initiates changes which enhance patient care, for supervisor's review. f. Maintains and improves technical expertise by attending continuing education programs and reading current literature in the field. g. Attends all in-service sessions as required h. Participates actively in developing, evaluating, and implementing approved new procedures, or modifications to existing policies or procedures. i. Participates in all CAP and State Proficiency Testing. Other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications 1. Valid license as a clinical laboratory technologist, cytotechnologist, or histotechnologist issued by the NYSED. In addition to meeting the qualification requirement of Assignment Level II, appointment to Level III requires: 1. One (1) year of full-time paid experience as a technologist in a clinical laboratory or blood bank.
