Overview Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) is seeking a Vice President for the Public Affairs team. The Vice President (VP) of Public Affairs leads proactive communications and public affairs activities on core priority issues. This individual reports to the Chief Public Affairs Officer and serves as a member of the department leadership team helping to develop and execute the public affairs strategy for the association, including our most visible and highest-impact campaigns and initiatives. These activities are organizationally cross-cutting and require a high degree of collaboration with colleagues in other departments, subject matter experts, member companies, and a wide variety of external stakeholders. The Vice President is responsible for: Serving as a member of the department leadership team helping to craft the strategy for the Public Affairs department. Overseeing the development and execution of comprehensive public affairs campaigns on multiple industry issue priorities. Leading and developing a team of public affairs professionals. Managing budgets and overseeing consultants who support issue-specific public affairs campaigns. Serving as a PhRMA representative at conferences, meetings and events. Serving as a point of contact for member companies, including presenting at meetings and on conference calls, sending regular communications, and providing strategic guidance to companies. Overseeing the development of impactful messaging and communications materials, including blog posts, op-eds, letters to the editor, press releases, talking points, and presentations. Serving as an on-the-record spokesperson on priority issues, as needed. Collaborating with colleagues in other departments on legislative, grassroots and third-party activities, including providing communications and messaging support. Perform other duties as assigned. The preferred candidate will bring substantive healthcare communications expertise and be an organized, detail-oriented, self-starter with excellent writing skills and the ability to convey content in an audience-appropriate and compelling manner. Demonstrated consensus building, decision-making and interpersonal skills are essential. This is a highly visible, fast-paced position that is both internally and externally facing. Accordingly, the successful candidate should be adaptable, able to reprioritize and shift gears quickly, comfortable in a high-pressure environment and be politically savvy, diplomatic, responsive, and mature. Professional Experience / Requirements Bachelor's degree required. (Master's degree in Health Policy, Public Policy, Communications or related field preferred). Health care issue experience and expertise required. International communications experience preferred. Minimum 12 years of diverse communications experience including time spent within corporate, government, public relations agency, trade association and/or advocacy organization(s). 5+ years of proven management of staff, consultants and complex issues, projects, tasks, requests, budgets and timelines. Enjoys managing and mentoring staff. A results-oriented manager - business, political and/or trade association experience preferred with a keen understanding of organizational operations/dynamics. Ability to inspire confidence in senior leadership within the organization and with external constituencies. Ability to balance the needs of various internal and external parties with flexibility and a steady temperament. Must be willing to travel domestically and internationally. Must be responsive/available after hours and on weekends. Potential Salary $249,000 - $354,000 per annum. Salary is commensurate with experience and other compensable factors.
