Salary: $48,025.00 Annually Location : City Lot, VA Job Type: Full Time Job Number: 03641 Department: PUBLIC WORKS-REG REFUSE COLL Opening Date: 10/30/2024 Closing Date: 11/6/2024 11:59 PM Eastern Description Under general supervision, performs specialized skilled work in the operation of one or more types of motorized heavy equipment used in the transfer of refuse and debris from collection sites to the SPSA landfill for the Public Works Department. Work involves operating such heavy equipment as heavy trucks, automated trucks, compactor trucks and boom trucks. Employee is responsible for manipulating such vehicles with considerable skill and constant attention to safety of operation in order to prevent accidents. Employee is also responsible for performing minor preventive maintenance on equipment; and performing various duties to assist department labor crews. Employee must exercise some independent judgment in the performance of assigned tasks. Reports to the Refuse Field Supervisor. Essential Job Functions Inspects boom truck and prepare for daily pick up of large refuse which includes checking oil, water, tires, air tanks and checking all other requirements needed before leaving the lot; inspect and prepare Automated and Compactor trucks when assigned; report any damage to the Supervisor. Picks up large refuse for the City of Suffolk which includes 6X6X9 piles of limbs and bulk items such as refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, hot water heaters and large furniture that can't be picked up by the compactor or automated trucks. Calls dispatch when piles of limbs or debris looks too large to pick up and the Inspector needs to investigate. Assists with neighborhood clean-ups which involves picking up large amounts of debris and limbs. Maintains cleanliness of truck by keeping truck cleaned, washed and greased. Reports any breakdowns and follow requirements needed in taking truck to proper facility to get repaired. Follows safety procedures at all times which includes no involvement with accidents or moving violations. May perform on call duties for inclement weather at all times including snow storms, hurricanes, rain and extreme heat. Performs other related duties as required. Required Qualifications Graduation from high school or equivalent. Requires a valid commercial driver's license. Possession of a valid commercial driver's license and one year experience driving a commercial vehicle. Supplemental Information Knowledge of the operation of motorized equipment used in sanitation operations. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and the proper safety precautions involved in operating heavy motorized equipment. Skilled in the use and operation of various heavy trucks. Ability to operate trucks over assigned routes safely and in accordance with traffic laws and regulations. Ability to perform minor maintenance on heavy motorized equipment. Ability to follow oral instructions. Ability to work effectively in an unpleasant working environment. Ability to exercise tact and courtesy in contact with the general public. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments. Members may voluntarily contribute up to an additional 4 percent in 0.5 percent increments to the defined contribution plan each month. Members can increase or decrease their voluntary contributions on a quarterly basis. With the mandatory and voluntary contributions to the defined contribution component of the plan, members can contribute a maximum of 5 percent with a 3.5 percent match from the employer. Paid Time Off (PTO) Yearly earnings 120 Hours (1-59 months), 144 Hours (60-119 months), 168 Hours (months), 192 Hours (180 and over) Sick Leave Part Time employees earn 4 hours per month Sick leave accrues at the end of the month and may be accrued with no ceiling. Personal Leave All regular full time employees are granted 24 hours of personal leave each calendar year. Personal leave must be preapproved and is not cumulative. Life Insurance The city pays the entire premium for life insurance coverage in the amount of 2 times annual salary for natural death and 4 times annual salary for accidental death. Optional Life Insurance Employees have the option of electing additional life insurance coverage in the amount of 1, 2, 3 or 4 times their annual salary. Employees may only purchase optional life insurance on spouses and children if they are enrolled in optional life insurance for themselves. Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) 12 weeks of job protected leave for leaves approved in accordance with the Family Medical Leave Act. Employees receive continuation of health insurance, job protection and consideration for a comparable job when available, or an equivalent job, upon return to work. Funeral Leave 24 hours of paid leave of absence in case of death in immediate family. Holidays Suffolk follows the Virginia State holiday calendar as set by the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
