Header Apprentice GENERAL SUMMARY OF THE JOB: This apprentice position requires the operation and/or basic set-up of manufacturing equipment with moderate direction or supervision. The incumbent will possess and demonstrate the ability to gain the skills necessary to maintain production requirements and quality standards. Continuous Improvement of processes and products are an ongoing function of this position. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Follow all safety rules. Maintain clean, orderly work area Operate equipment and perform basic machine set-ups as required. Perform first piece inspection, monitor the quality of all parts, and make adjustments to maintain quality standards. Perform the duties required to record data for SPC, ISO/QS documentation. Move material by operating a forklift or using non-motorized devices. Perform minor machine maintenance such as oil changes and tightening of bolts. Assist other operators as needed. Suggest process improvement ideas. All other duties as assigned by the supervisor. EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED: Ability to use all gages and gaging techniques required. Thorough understanding of SPC. Basic computer knowledge. Knowledge in ISO/QS requirements. Ability to gain skills necessary to operate equipment and perform minor machine set-ups. Ability to complete Job Skills Training Matrix for Header Operator upon completion of training. Ability to consistently meet production and quality standards Ability to demonstrate the knowledge and understanding of all required operator documentation. Good teamwork skills. Ability to identify routine problem causation and correct routine problems. Use math skills for blueprint reading, gaging and SPC. Demonstrate the understanding of the manufacturing process and machine requirements to perform basic and repetitive work assignments. Provide written communication as needed. Must comply with all company policies and procedures, including safety guidelines and practices. HS Diploma, GED or relevant experience. Fluent in English (both strong verbal and written communication skills). Preferred Skills & Abilities: Previous manufacturing experience. Previous machine set-up/operating experience. Ability to read gages, micrometers, and blueprints. Forklift operation/material-handling experience. Computer literate. TOOLS USED: Micrometers, calipers, gauges, comparators, wrenches and other general tools and equipment ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO: Factory conditions vary but machines give off heat, smoke/mist, and some locations have heat treat furnaces that may increase the temperature inside of buildings. All equipment has moving mechanical parts. Machine operators must work with oils and other chemicals in the manufacturing of parts and in cleaning of work areas. Because wiring is present, there is some minor risk of electrical shock while operating equipment. When in operation, machines will vibrate, as will the feeding systems of some equipment. Hearing protection is required PPE due to consistent decibel levels present when equipment is operating. Standing/walking required to perform machine setup/operation, material handling, data recording. Sitting may be required to perform some machine operation and data recording. Gripping/handling/fine finger movements are required for machine setup/operation, mechanical adjustments, gaging of parts, housekeeping, and control/switch operation. Reaching, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching are physical requirements associated with setting up and operating equipment. Talking and hearing may be necessary to communicate effectively with co-workers and supervisors; as well as to hear alarms, pages, and machine noises. Pulling/pushing of parts on wheeled devices may reach a weight of 300 pounds.
