An employee in this class participates in the installation, monitoring, maintenance, support, and optimization of all IT infrastructure components. Ensures the stability and integrity of the City's server environment including virtual infrastructure, active directory, and data storage and backups. Works under the general direction of the IT Systems and Infrastructure Manager with considerable opportunity for the use of independent judgment. Work is reviewed for conformance to goals and objectives. Characteristic Work Provides daily system administration for IT infrastructure components to ensure the stable operation of the City's servers and storage systems. Plans, designs, and installs infrastructure components and changes. Designs, installs, administers, and optimizes physical and virtual servers and related components to achieve high performance of the various business applications. Creates and manages virtual machines in VMware. Provides operational engineering support to enterprise-level physical and virtual servers. Sets up and administers service accounts. Maintains system documentation. Installs system-wide software and allocates mass storage space. Proactively monitors event logs for changes or errors and takes appropriate actions to resolve issues. Creates custom alerts for storage, memory or CPU utilization. Collaborates with other IT team members, users and vendors to identify and resolve problems. Prepares test and after action reports. Evaluates vendor products and makes recommendations to purchase hardware and software. Participates in developing and enforcing IT policies and procedures related to security and the use of computing resources. Provides level III technical support for networking, systems administration and complex software issues. Assists with security patches, firmware upgrades, and documentation of infrastructure modifications. Builds and manages Windows Servers. Implements, manages and tests disaster recovery processes and business continuity procedures. Schedules routine maintenance and hardware installations to minimize failure, down time and provide disaster prevention. Initiates and participates in the evaluation and recommendation of network hardware, equipment, tools, and software. Provides advanced technical direction to service desk staff. Provides 24/7 on call support during non-business hours as needed. Responsible for the handling of sensitive and confidential information. Maintains vendor relationships with IT vendors. Maintains professional competency and keeps current with technological advances and developments. Drives to train personnel in the proper use of hardware and software. Performs related work as required. Minimum Qualifications Graduation from an accredited college or university with a baccalaureate degree in computer science or related field and a minimum of three years of paid experience in IT systems administration. The college requirement may be substituted on a year-for-year basis with related training and paid experience. Possession of a valid State of Ohio driver's license. Considerable knowledge of IT infrastructure, server management, and virtualization. Considerable knowledge of the methods and practices used in virtualization and server management. Knowledge of MS Windows Server, Distributed File System (DFS), and MS-SQL Server, and Active Directory. Considerable knowledge of IT systems analysis and design. Knowledge of user needs assessment procedures and techniques. Knowledge of customer service procedures and techniques. Skill in analyzing needs and in detecting, defining and resolving problems. Skill in analyzing and troubleshooting operating platform/connectivity problems. Ability to configure virtualized servers, software, virtualized desktops, and peripheral equipment. Ability to translate technical terminology into terms understandable to users. Ability to apply security concepts while designing and maintaining virtual machines, server structures, and data integrity. Ability to establish and maintain working relations with persons at all levels of the public and private sectors. Ability to work on call and as needed to support 24/7 operations. Ability to complete system evaluations and perform support services. Ability to safety operate a motor vehicle. List of essential job functions available upon request. Competitive Examination Process This is a classified position. The selection process will consist of an assessment interview with credit for education and experience. Candidates must pass the assessment interview in order to receive credit for education and experience. TEST WEIGHTS: Assessment Interview 70%, Education 20%, Experience 10%. Candidates must meet the qualifications and requirements listed in the announcement at the time of examination and at the time of appointment. NOTE: The assessment interview may be suspended if shown to be impractical because of an insufficient number of qualified candidates. The candidates will then be ranked in a standard manner based on 70% for qualifying, 20% for education, and 10% for experience. RESIDENCY: Candidates who have been resident citizens within the corporate limits of the City of Akron for at least one year immediately prior to the examination and who continue to reside within the corporate limits of the City of Akron throughout the remainder of the selection process will have 5 points added to their passing grades. VETERANS: A veteran of the Armed Forces of the United States, honorably discharged from active duty, desiring a bonus of 5 points added to his/her passing grade, must submit proof of discharge in the form of a DD-214 with application.
