Salary: $21.24 - $37.17 Hourly Location : Stafford County, VA Job Type: Full-Time Job Number: 03729 Department: Landfill Opening Date: 10/29/2024 Starting Salary: $21.24 to $29.21/hour based on experience Job Description Performs intermediate semiskilled and skilled work involving the operation of landfill and heavy equipment. Does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision. Heavy Equipment Operator I position is the entry level position in the Heavy Equipment Operator job series. Employees at this level possess basic to intermediate skills and perform semi-independent work. The hiring range for this position is from $21.24 to $29.21/hour based on experience. The full salary range for this position is from $21.24 to $37.17/hour to provide opportunity for growth and development. Examples of Duties Operates heavy equipment in the operation and maintenance of the landfill; services and maintains equipment; Opens and closes landfill working areas; Operates a front-end loader tractor, pan, roller, motor grader, compactor, dozer, track loader, and related equipment in the operation and maintenance of a landfill; Places and compacts refuse and covers with earth; Clears land for expansion of landfill, including cutting of trees for disposal and firewood; Opens and maintains access roads; Services and makes minor repairs to equipment; Maintains equipment log, including daily walk around inspection and safety equipment check; Assists with snow removal and spreading sand; Operates a variety of small power equipment; Transports mobile recycling collection systems; Assists mechanic with major repairs to heavy equipment as needed; Assists with community cleanup programs; Performs related tasks as required. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities General knowledge of the principles and practices of operating and servicing heavy construction equipment; General knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; General knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary for the proper operation of varied construction and maintenance equipment; General knowledge and ability to identify and handle infectious and hazardous waste properly; Skilled in the care and operation of several types of construction equipment; Ability to operate vehicles and equipment fitted with automatic transmission; Ability to understand and follow vocal and written directions; mechanical aptitude; Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment. Education and Experience Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and 1 year of experience in the operation of heavy equipment and some experience in mechanical equipment repair.
