Position Summary The primary location of this position is on the main Cullowhee, NC campus. The Building and Environmental Services Technician (B.E.S.T.) is responsible for working on a team to ensure the Campus Recreation Center is clean and presentable for our students, faculty, staff, and guests. Duties include performing routine maintenance activities and notifying Associate Director of needed repairs or issues. GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Building Interior • Locker rooms & Bathroom - Disinfecting and cleaning lavatory, toilet features, shower stalls, lockers, and sinks • Floor care - Sweep, mop, dust, scrub, vacuum, and deep clean areas on a regular basis. Floor scrub and shampoo carpet as needed. • General cleaning - clean furniture and walls as needed. This includes but is not limited to woodwork, windows, mirrors, light fixtures, chairs, counters, and equipment • Waste removal - Empty of waste and recycling cans and replace liners. Disposal of waste in appropriate locations. • Disinfect commonly touched areas including, but not limited to, railings, countertops, tables, lockers, etc. • Assist with laundry • Assist with other maintenance, as needed Exterior Duties • Clean exterior mats, windows, and doors • Clean trash cans and empty when necessary • Shovel snow and distribute ice melt when necessary • Inspect and clean all areas surrounding the exterior of the building, including cobwebs, bird nests, and trash • Pressure wash building and walkway as necessary • Sweep, blow, and clean the exterior and entryways Student Staff • Assist in training all student staff members on general housekeeping protocols (spills, restocking, etc.) • Assist in training housekeeping student staff on detailed housekeeping protocols (use & maintenance of equipment, cleaning protocols & standards, etc.) • Assist with on shift supervision of student housekeeping staff, document, and report issues as they arise • Assist with the hiring, onboarding, and evaluation of student housekeeping staff. • Assist with student staff training and continued student development Special Duties • Maintain regular inventory of cleaning supplies and request purchasing in advance of need • Research and test new products for future use • Assist with the CRC annual shutdown, including moving and cleaning fitness equipment • Answer member questions and address member concerns • Attend staff meetings or other meetings as scheduled • Assist with set-up and tear down of special events • Assist with building evacuation during emergencies • Assist with risk management in the CRC • Work with other team members in a cooperative spirit Other duties as assigned by the Associate Director of CRW. This position is a 40-hour per week position and may require working days, evenings and weekends. Adjusted schedule is determined based on departmental and unit events and needs. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position • Ability to communicate in a positive and effective manner • General knowledge of cleaning public areas • Ability to follow oral and written instructions • Ability to read and comprehend labels and instructions regarding cleaning materials and equipment • Ability to lift/move heavy equipment (45lbs) and or furniture • Ability to learn how to safely operate cleaning equipment and how to mix chemicals for cleaning • Good communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills • Outstanding customer service skills • Ability to prioritize workload according to volume, urgency, etc. Minimum Qualifications Some knowledge of cleaning procedures, ability to follow instructions and to perform medium to heavy physical work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
