PURPOSE: Plan and coordinate activities of Research & Development relating to design and development of tooling, automation of equipment, new processes. Ensure that goals or objectives of projects are accomplished within prescribed time frame and funding parameters. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Generate engineering drawings, conduct and analyze data; document and track projects; produce and distribute appropriate reports. Uses computer assisted engineering and design software and equipment to perform engineering design tasks. Prepare customer quotations. Plan and formulate aspects of research and development proposals such as objective or purpose of project, application that can be utilized from findings, cost of project, equipment and human resource requirements. Design and oversee the building of equipment and tooling through standardization, automation, simplification and analysis to meet or be under estimated cost and timing. Perform duties to determine feasibility of designing new plant equipment or modifying existing facilities considering costs, available space, time limitations, and other technical and economic factors. Provide technical problem solving support utilizing designed experimentation in conjunction with analysis and sound engineering principles to technical problems. Interface and maintain favorable relations with tooling and equipment vendors; locate and investigate new potential sources; obtain and negotiate prices and terms; place orders. Initiate purchase requisition; obtain approval; expedite orders for firm delivery dates; maintain necessary records; verify and submit bills and invoices to Division Accountant. Follow prescribed environmental health and safety rules & regulations; insure that work area is maintained in a neat and orderly condition. ADDITIONAL SKILLS OR CREDENTIALS: Bachelors degree with emphasis on Engineering preferred Minimum 3 years experience preferred Rubber molding, adhesive coating, mold tooling and automation experience a preferred CAD modeling, cost estimating, equipment/tooling knowledge and project management preferred. Lean manufacturing experience preferred Technical minded Assertive/self-starter required Strong computer skills required Strong communication skills required Capable to handle multiple tasks simultaneously required Teamwork and problem solving skills required. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, use hands to position or move, reach with hands and arms, talk, and hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 lbs., frequently lift and/ or move up to 25 lbs. and occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Must be able to lift 40 lbs.
