Description About the Role Join one of the most diverse and innovative engineering design teams with multiple specialties within the transportation sector. The Port Authority's airports, ports, ferries, tunnels, bridges, bus terminals and rail transportation systems are important transportation links in the region. Reporting to the Principal Engineer for Port Structures and working closely with the Chief Structural Engineer, the successful candidate will provide structural engineering design services for the Authority's Port Facilities, (including Port Elizabeth, Port Newark, Port Jersey, Brooklyn Marine Terminal, New York New Jersey Rail, and Battery Park City Ferry Terminal). For all phases of a project, from conceptual design, through construction. The Port Authority is in the early phase of planning of a multi-billion-dollar major rehabilitation of their Port structures. This position plays a critical role in in-house design, as well as in review of consultant prepared work. This position will be located at 4 WTC, 150 Greenwich St., 20th Fl., New York, NY Responsibilities As a member of the Structural Engineering Design Division, the Senior Structural Engineer will report to the Principal Structural Engineer, of the Port Facilities group, and will be responsible for professional design services including: Developing project scope of work and structural design, criteria, and lead structural design projects for various structural types, including buildings, bridges and waterfront facilities. Preparing and coordinating engineering reports, contract drawings, specifications, and cost estimates for new facilities and for the repair of existing structures. Review of consultant and contractor submittals and ensuring that consultant designs conform to the scope of work, codes and Port Authority Standards. Coordination of design projects with other design disciplines, ensuring minimal disruption of facility operations, through staging and construction sequencing. Providing engineering support during construction and assist the Principal Engineer with the overall professional development and motivation of staff members. Coordinate and conduct field inspections related to design work and evaluate field conditions and structural deficiencies. Estimating remaining useful design life of structures. Minimum Qualifications Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering (with concentration in Structural Design) from an ABET four-year accredited engineering college or university. Valid Professional Engineer license in the State of NY and/or the State of NJ. 9 + years of professional structural design experience, including supervisory experience on both small and large scale multi-disciplinary design projects. Design experience with new construction and rehabilitation (structural integrity) of structures, including, buildings, bridges, earth supporting structures, precast structures, pile supported structures, etc. Working knowledge of local codes in the New York and New Jersey area. Valid driver's license or ability to attain one within 6 months of employment. Desired Qualifications Design experience with waterfront structures, pier construction and rehabilitation, or similar projects Working knowledge of Federal and local codes in New York and New Jersey area including AASHTO Specifications for Highway Bridges, NYC Building Code, IBC code (NJ), UBC code and Unified Facilities Criteria, as well as ACI 318, AISC (steel construction manual) and demonstrated knowledge and education necessary to properly apply provisions of these codes Strong conceptualization, problem solving, decision- making and conflict resolution skills from experience in routine and large-scale transportation projects. Sound understanding of construction and engineering design principles. Excellent organizational skills with the ability to work independently and prioritize as required. Proficiency in preparing design reports, contract drawings, cost estimates and technical specifications. Proficiency in the use of software including but not limited to structural design (SAP, ETABS, STAAD, RISA, or similar), modeling (AUTOCAD, REVIT, or similar), and Microsoft Office suite. Structural inspection experience. Excellent presentation skills, including experience making presentations to staff and outside stakeholders. Ability to work effectively within a multi-discipline design team. Master's degree in Structural Engineering from an ABET four-year accredited engineering college or university. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
