PURPOSE: The Manufacturing Engineer will research, model and develop manufacturing technologies, tool designs and processes for use in new and continuing programs for aircrew and groundcrew applications. This position mainly involves technical know-how and aid in developing and transfer solutions into a manufacturing environment with an emphasis on design for manufacturing. The candidate will also be responsible for executing critical design review processes as required for new product development as well as supporting ongoing production programs. DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsibility for the manufacturing technology & process development and transition to production of new ballistic and blunt impact resistance systems. Knowledge of composite materials and related processes and tooling is highly desired. Familiarity with new product development process and transfer to production, supporting tool design and process development thru qualification. Coordinate with interdisciplinary engineering teams to infuse mechanical design requirements and features, establishing viability of overall design approach and guide planning and/or directions. Stay current on all types of armor technologies, requirements, manufacturing methods and tool designs. Investigate and recommend new technologies. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Participate in integrated product development teams addressing and solving manufacturing issues and related technical risks. Conduct design reviews and create written reports and deliver oral presentations (including preparation) as required. Participate in trade studies to help support the most balanced solution. Lead the design, development, procurement and fabrication of tooling and production processes. Provide technical support to manufacturing such as process/tool evaluations; recommend specific equipment development needs, root cause analysis and implementation of corrective actions. Help to coordinate and support preproduction build activities. Provide technical support to manufacturing operations to resolve process problems and supplier issues relating to product performance and quality attainment. Facilitate and support PFMEA and RPN reduction efforts. Initiate and/or review changes to engineering drawings or process documentation Create documented procedures relative to engineering and manufacturing processes as required. Develop and apply lean Six Sigma processes in design and manufacturing solutions. Schedule flexibility to support critical deadlines may be required. Requirements EDUCATION AND/OR PROFESSIONAL LICENSE(s): Minimum BS degree or equivalent in materials, aerospace, mechanical, or a related engineering/scientific field is required. Advanced Degree preferred. *EXPERIENCE: * Preferred one to five years of experience with hands-on composites process and technology design, manufacturability analysis and experimental techniques. Experience working within an integrated product development team environment is preferred. Prior experience in aerospace/defense industries with various composites molding techniques and post molding secondary operations preferred. Previous experience with the development of manufacturing related documentation (MCPs, SWIs, BOMs, Labor Routings). KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES · A sound understanding of composite design, familiarity with new product development process and transfer to production, supporting tool design and process development thru qualification. Ability to read, analyze and interpret 3D models (SolidWorks preferred) and technical documents to support tooling, part, and subassembly reviews. Possess excellent written and oral communication skills as well as fluency in MS Office Products, Visio, Project, and statistical processing software such as MiniTab or similar know edge is preferred. POSITION SUPERVISES (by department name or job title): Position will be primarily one of an individual contributor. May be required to supervise and coordinate activities with technicians or lab personnel and coordinate with engineers but will not be directly responsible for reporting/evaluating others. Candidate needs to take direction and work independently with minimal supervision. CONTACT WITH OTHERS: Requires close contact and interaction with other R&D staff, engineering, and production process personnel. Contact with vendors, customers and professional organizations is an essential part of the job. Contact with customers is important to understand their needs, communicate progress, and gauge status. PHYSICAL/MENTAL/COMMUNICATION REQUIREMENTS: Employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear; and taste or smell. The employee may lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by the job may include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The individual must have a high level of comprehension, and a high level of general, verbal, written, and numerical intelligence. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Works majority of the day in a climate-controlled environment, with the exception of or otherwise specified, performing work in the warehouse or manufacturing areas which are subject to changes in temperature and/or noise. TRAVEL: Limited travel required LOCATION: Gentex's Carbondale facility is located in Northeastern Pennsylvania in Lackawanna County. Carbondale, PA is about twenty miles north of Scranton, PA, 50 miles south of Binghamton, NY, and about 125 miles from New York City and Philadelphia.
