This Opportunity WSP is currently initiating a search for a Traffic Engineer to join our New England team in Boston, MA or Glastonbury, CT office. Be involved in projects with our Traffic Engineering Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client's objectives and solves their challenges. Provides technical assistance and guidance for the analysis, improvement, planning, engineering, design, and operation of streets and highways, their networks, adjacent land uses, and interaction with other modes of transportation and their terminals. Tasks may include assisting with performing capacity analyses, reviewing permitting, and assisting with the design, concept development, and construction of roadways, traffic patterns, and traffic signal design and timing. Generates accurate and concise reports and documentation regarding construction specifications. Ensures that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, safety, and functionality. Your Impact Perform professional traffic engineering work and assist with conducting investigations and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, roadways, intersections, signage, signals, pavement markings, and transportation corridors to determine conformance with applicable rules, standards, and construction or operating permits. Participate in incorporating advanced modeling techniques, concept development, design requirements, and operating strategies to account for the safety and functionality of end-users, transportation vehicles/systems, and incorporate future-ready solutions with traffic engineering design standards. Work as an individual or as part of a cross-functional team of engineers, planners, and scientific professionals to execute project work, assist with laying out roadways, establishing reference points/elevations/grades to guide construction, calculating costs and quantities of material/equipment/labor, and ensuring project work conforms with specifications, permit applications, compliance documentation, and regulatory and technical analysis memos. Assist with verifying the characteristics of a site, providing technical assistance on traffic engineering studies, capacity analyses, traffic complaint investigation, traffic plan review, signal system design, monitoring and control, and operations analysis to ensure roadways are designed in a safe and efficient way and the driver is provided with all of the necessary information and safety metrics to help ensure that their driving experience is safe and efficient. Conduct traffic counts for roadways and intersections to determine the volume of traffic, where the traffic is going to and from, and the type of traffic on the roadway. Takes a second look at safety features on the road, recommending traffic safety enhancement projects on the basis of respective studies. Determine appropriate signage, signals, and pavement markings along a new or existing road. Investigate accident data and determines if changes can be made to roadways or intersections to make it safer for all who use the roads. Prepare data and visualizations such as tables, charts, accurate reports, and illustrations for the interpretation or presentation of data, findings, or analyses. Maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate and precise measurements, statistical analysis, and reporting. Assist with development and scoping of small- to medium-sized projects. Contribute to the preparation of technical reports and presentations that explain research and findings to improve, prevent, control, restore, or address design and/or construction issues or problems. Conduct engineering studies and surveys to gain further information on a particular design and construction problem or issue and/or to plan for future needs. Assist in the analysis, evaluation, and interpretation of data obtained during field/site investigations, offering input with developing action plans for low to mid-level risk mitigation activities. Work collaboratively with other engineers, planners, scientific professionals, and DOT authorities on Federal, State, regional, and locally funded road and transportation improvement and development projects. Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures. Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs. Who You Are Required Qualifications Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, or closely related discipline. 3+ years of relevant post education experience in engineering discipline and prior traffic design experience. Engineer in Training Certification. Prior demonstrated knowledge and experience with DOT traffic signal design principals. Knowledge of traffic engineering principles, practices, process, and design/build related to traffic control equipment, capacity and operational analysis, project management, and related communications systems. Working knowledge of relevant roadway transportation construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements. Ability to make technical computations and calculations involving the application of engineering principles, understanding plans and specifications and making factual comparisons to the appropriate regulations. Ability to coordinate with agency regulators and understand requirements. Capable interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience. Effective self-leadership with attention to detail, results orientation, and managing multiple priorities in a dynamic work environment. Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instruction, work independently, and comply with company policies. Moderate proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, technology, math principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools. Experience with AutoCAD, Microstation, and other applicable design software packages. Critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, statistical analysis and arriving at the most effective, economical, and logical solution. Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies. Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek. Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements. Preferred Qualifications: Master's Degree in Engineering. Essential Professional Licensure/Certification. Experience managing small to mid-size projects.
