Position Type: Support Staff/Bus Driver Date Posted: 7/30/2024 Location: Bus Garage VERMILION LOCAL SCHOOL DISTRICT BUS DRIVER JOB DESCRIPTION JOB TITLE: Bus Driver Classified- OAPSE Union REPORTS TO : Director of Transportation Starting pay - Based on experience $19.07 - $23.45 hr. Training starting pay $15.50/hr. Paid training by VLSD TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Contract length will be established by the number of pupil days. The number and length of day will vary in relation to the route. PURPOSE STATEMENT: The school bus driver's responsibilities include ensuring proper vehicle maintenance, observing safety and traffic rules, and maintaining order among students while they are on the bus. To be successful as a school bus driver you should enjoy working with children and strictly observe passenger transport regulations. QUALIFICATION: 1. High School Diploma or GED 2. Completion of pre-employment driver's training and ability to pass a physical examination. 3. Holder of a valid Commercial Driver's License with School Bus Drivers Certification 4. Able to meet and work with the general public 5. Able to relate to students in a warm and positive manner 6. Completion of basic bus drivers training within one year; 7. Pass mandated criminal records check, required drug testing and other tests as required 8. Able to meet standards and be certified by the Erie-Huron-Ottawa Educational Service Center. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Obey all traffic laws. 2. Observe all safety regulations for busing of students. 3. Be familiar with the School Bus Handbook for parents and students printed by the Board of Education, and enforce same. 4. Maintain discipline when students are on the bus. 5. Keep assigned bus clean and sanitary. 6. Check assigned bus at end of each run for sleeping students and turn the card in the rear window to indicate that the bus is empty. 7. Check bus before and after each operation for mechanical defects and report same to Transportation Supervisor or Assistant Transportation Supervisor. 8. Keep to assigned schedule, route and stops. Do not vary from assigned schedule unless authorized by the Supervisor, or in case of emergency. 9. Complete all reports and forms as required. 10. Keep an accurate and up-to-date list of students and maps of route and stops on the bus or in the bus pocket at all times. 11. Keep bus driver handbook up-to-date and in good condition at all time. 12. Report all accidents immediately and complete all forms required. 13. Report any absence or lateness from work to the Supervisor at the earliest possible time so that a substitute can be obtained. 14. The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the district. 15. Perform other related duties as assigned. EVALUATION: Evaluation will be done on an annual basis until a continuing contract is awarded, and every two years thereafter.
