Posting Details Position Information Job Title Assistant Controller Summary The Assistant Controller is responsible for all areas relating to accounts payable and payroll along with various areas of financial reporting. This position will be responsible for developing and maintaining accounting principles, practices and procedures to ensure accurate and timely financial statements. The Assistant Controller supervises the accounts payable and payroll departments and is responsible for managing these departments to ensure that work is properly allocated and completed in a timely and accurate manner. This position addresses tight deadlines and a multitude of accounting activities including payroll tax reporting, general ledger preparation, financial reporting, audit preparation, internal control documentation and the support of budget and forecast activities. The Assistant Controller will report to the Controller and have contact with, the VP of Finance, Human Resources and other areas throughout the campus, which requires strong interpersonal communication skills both written and verbal. Duties and Responsibilities Obtain and maintain a thorough understanding of the financial reporting and general ledger structure. Ensure an accurate and timely monthly, quarterly and year-end close. Ensure the timely filing of all university related tax requirements. Supervise the accounts payable and payroll departments to ensure all employees and vendors are paid accurately and on-time. Prepare monthly financial statements of the University's outside properties through a collaboration with the outside firm that manages the properties. Facilitates the accounting and financial statement preparation for the Jesuit Community at John Carroll. Works closely with the University's Human Resources Department to ensure the accurate reporting of all university related benefits. Monitors and analyzes department work to develop more efficient procedures and use of resources while maintaining a high level of accuracy. Advises staff regarding the handling of non-routine reporting transactions. Responds to inquiries from the Controller, and other finance and university wide managers regarding financial results, special reporting requests and the like. Research new tax issues and ensure the university complies with the new rules. Assist in development and implementation of new procedures and features to enhance the workflow of the department. Provide training to new and existing staff as needed. Work with each direct report to establish goals and objectives for each year and monitor and advise on the progress to enhance the professional development of staff. Supports budget and forecasting activities. Support Controller with special projects and workflow process improvements. Required Qualifications BA or BS degree in Business or Accounting Five years or more supervisory experience in the finance department Three years or more of payroll experience Documented ability in developing and maintaining accounting principles, practices and procedures PC proficient and able to thrive in a fast -pace setting Proven experience with Microsoft Excel, Access and Word Strong verbal and written communication skills Strong interpersonal, supervisory and customer service skills Ability to multi-task, work under pressure and meet deadlines Interest in understanding and supporting John Carroll's mission to inspire individuals to excel in learning, leadership, and service in the region and in the world Preferred Qualifications Master's Degree or CPA/CMA License Experience with Oracle ERP system Normal Work Location, Hours and Conditions This position works in person from our campus in University Heights, Ohio. University core business hours are generally 8:30 am - 5:00 pm. This position will require occasional work to be performed outside of normal business hours based on department operations. Physical Requirements Office functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; to travel to other office locations and to verbally communicate to exchange information. Hours Full Time FLSA Exempt (Salary) Compensation & Benefits Starting salary will be $70,000.00 - $85,000.00, commensurate with qualifications.
