As an Operating Engineer Heavy Equipment Apprentice, the employee will experience a combination of classroom and on the job, hands-on training. The training outline will contain the elements necessary to become a skilled worker in this occupation and will comply with the New York State Department of Labor Apprenticeship Training Program. Each eligible applicant will be evaluated and scored in accordance with the selection factors and criteria detailed by the Department of Labor. The Operating Engineer Heavy Equipment Apprentice will typically do the following: Clean and maintain equipment, making basic repairs as necessary Report malfunctioning equipment to supervisors Move levers, push pedals, or turn valves to drive and maneuver equipment Coordinate machine actions with crew members using hand or audio signals The Operating Engineer Heavy Equipment Apprentice will use machinery to move building supplies, earth, and other heavy materials at construction sites. They will operate equipment that clears and grades land to prepare it for the construction of roads, bridges, buildings, aircraft runways, dams, and other structures. Physical Demands: The Operating Engineer Heavy Equipment Apprentice may need to work at heights to service pulleys or other devices at the top of structures which may be several stories tall. The apprentice should have steady hands and feet to guide and control heavy machinery precisely, sometimes in tight spaces, may be required to frequently push, carry, or move heavy objects and may be required to lift more than 50 pounds as part of their duties. Location: The successful candidate will work with our site construction crews on a variety of projects located throughout the Capital District. Our main office is located at 2170 River Road Coeymans, NY 12045. The hourly rate for this apprenticeship is $23.00.
