The Lab Metallurgist supports process and product development, customer inquiries and issues, as well as quality assurance and lab/testing concerns. Works both independently and as part of a team on projects optimizing productivity and yield. Requires flexibility and the ability to work on multiple projects at once. A self-starter who operates well without detailed instruction and must be able to identify and then solve problems. Key Accountabilities Provides technical coordination and support primarily with the finishing operations laboratory but also throughout the other finishing operations. Collect, interpret and extrapolate data from the production process in order to monitor current performance against established practices and make recommendations on how to improve efficiencies for the future. Assists sales in reviewing specifications/requirements for feasibility of production through data analysis and communication with the finishing departments. Assists in validation activities for new equipment/processes/software. Assists in the preparation and completion of corrective actions and failure analyses both within and external to the facility. This will require understanding and application of laboratory techniques used for this purpose. Works individually and in teams on process, practice, and equipment related projects throughout the company. Assists all finishing operations with product quality concerns and product development initiatives from conception through implementation. Assist QA department with both internal and external audits. Serve as technical liaison for customers with questions and/or problems regarding product quality as well as helping to organize and coordinate customer visits and preparing reports to customers. Coordinate with area engineers/managers during routine operations and assist in solving production anomalies in the operations process. Develop and perform experiments/trials both bench top and production scale for process measurement and improvement. Participate in development of industry/customer specifications. Requirements Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Material Science Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering or related field required and 3-5 years of industrial experience, preferred. Certifications in Ultrasonic Level III, Eddy Current III, Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) or Certified Quality Auditor is a plus. Broad technical knowledge of metallurgy, testing, and an understanding of titanium manufacturing techniques used in the melting, forging, and rolling is preferred, though a demonstrated ability to learn is required. Ability to apply engineering fundamentals to the continuous improvement efforts of production and maximize the efficiency of operations. Must possess good communication skills, have the ability to articulate ideas, be detail oriented, and be comfortable dealing with employees at all levels within the organization, as well as customers, suppliers and technical associations. Occasional travel to customer sites, industry meetings, and other Perryman facilities will be required.
