The Animal Health Branch (AHB) of the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) is hiring one (1) Veterinarian General. This Veterinarian General will be field-based and work within the California animal agriculture community to support livestock and poultry health initiatives. We are looking for an energetic, thoughtful, self-directed veterinarian who has advanced interest in infectious diseases. Strong communication skills and willingness to work within a multi-talented team is imperative. The incumbent will be tasked to provide technical expertise to accredited veterinarians and producers, collect and direct sampling of livestock and poultry and to support diagnostic efforts on farms. The Animal Health Branch is advertising to fill a Veterinarian (General) with responsibilities including but not limited to: Participate in Animal Health Management Activities such as: • Plan, organize and coordinate animal health management activities, such as: o Diagnosing livestock and poultry diseases o Performing tests and necropsies and collecting samples from animals and the environment o Interpreting laboratory test results o Completing comprehensive reports on diagnosis o Reviewing completed cases for appropriate action o Investigating the epidemiology of livestock and poultry disease outbreaks o Preventing, controlling, monitoring, and eradicating livestock and poultry diseases o Euthanizing and disposing of livestock and poultry carcasses o Planning and implementing appropriate biosecurity measures o Operating and maintaining all equipment necessary to complete required jobs • Review and enforce the laws, regulations, and policies of CDFA, as well as those of various local, State, and Federal government agencies, in all aspects of assigned duties. • Drive and travel to locations within California to apply and enforce any of the above laws, regulations, or policies. • Plan, organize, direct, coordinate, review, and evaluate the effectiveness of AHB procedures and when appropriate, develop and recommend alternative practices and procedures. • Lead Veterinarians, Livestock Inspectors, Environmental Scientists, Research Scientists, and office personnel when appropriate. • Maintain a working knowledge of, and provide updates for, the AHB Field Manual.
