Position: Scientist / Training Coordinator Location : Brisbane - CA-US Position Summary The Non-Clinical Safety and Veterinary Sciences organization enables the safe conduct of clinical studies and marketing applications while applying the core underlying principles of robust science & problem solving, 3R's (reduce, replace, and refine), animal welfare, and quality & compliance to our nonclinical efforts. The Veterinary Sciences (VS) department at BMS in Brisbane, CA (BNE), is seeking a Training Coordinator who will provide daily support to the training and competency program in the San Francisco Bay Area. The successful candidate will play an important role in the administrative and technical execution of the training program, which will include assisting in the development and implementation of competency and proficiency standards for Veterinary Sciences and research personnel, as well as performing hands-on training for various bio -methodologies. This individual will also be responsible for performing other tasks to support the animal care and use program as required. As a part of their daily job expectations, the successful candidate will ensure compliance with regulations and guidelines through participation in the Post-Approval Monitoring Program and maintain the appropriate documentation. The candidate will have the opportunity to actively participate in veterinary clinical and technical research support procedures. Key Responsibilities Assist in the development and implementation of training guidelines to define competency and proficiency standards for a variety of techniques common in rodent-based research. Participate in and lead didactic and hands-on training sessions for Veterinary Sciences and research personnel on topics such as animal welfare guidelines and regulations, anesthesia and analgesia, facility policies and procedures, and various bio - methodologies. Provides surgical assistance including administration of general anesthesia, surgical preparation, peri-operative care, and investigates and develops anesthesia and analgesia protocols. Operates and troubleshoots medical or laboratory equipment (e.g., anesthesia, euthanasia, etc.), and trains other staff in proper use, application, and troubleshooting of this equipment. Review relevant Standard Operating Procedures to ensure compliance with external guidelines and regulations governing animal care and use. Collaborate with the veterinary and investigative staff on research projects, primarily pre-clinical study conduct; provide support and training on technical procedures for investigative staff; and understand active research activities. Support multi-site training program and global animal welfare initiatives. Assist with the veterinary clinical program (e.g. rodent health monitoring, triage/documentation of animal health concerns, etc) as needed. Partner with EHS and facilities personnel on alignment for training expectations around safety and ergonomics. Some travel between domestic BMS sites may be necessary. Basic Qualifications Bachelor's Degree 5+ years of academic / industry experience OR Master's Degree 3+ years of academic / industry experience OR PhD No experience required Preferred Qualifications Must have an excellent understanding of the biology and be proficient in handling various laboratory animal species including A-covered species. Ability to work independently and effectively with a team. Must have experience with technical procedures including but not limited to PO, SQ, IM, IV, RO and IP treatments; blood and sample collection in common laboratory animal species; use of inhalant and injectable anesthetics; aseptic technique; perioperative care; and necropsy. Must have a good understanding of research animal facility operations to include animal welfare practices, husbandry procedures, enrichment programs, and applicable regulations. Must be proficient with the use and maintenance of standard equipment within an animal research facility and have demonstrated the ability to train others to operate this equipment. Must have strong verbal and written communication skills, excellent organizational skills, and exceptional attention to detail. Must have an understanding of and commitment to the principles of Reduce, Replace, Refine (3R's) Must have a good understanding of the operation and oversight of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and be able to interpret protocols, write protocols and submit amendments. Demonstrates strong leadership capabilities including relevant experience in training, coaching, and/or mentoring others Proficiency in presentation skills and facilitation of trainings with a strong understanding of adult learning theories Demonstrate experience with scheduling and coordination of assigned tasks Strong project management skills including experience in facilitating and implementing training related initiatives Experience with electronic learning management systems or training record management preferred. AALAS Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) Certification or equivalent industry experience required Registered or Licensed Veterinary Technician (RVT/LVT) preferred AALAS Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) Certification preferred Master's Degree or equivalent preferred For California Sites - The starting compensation for this job is a range from $98,000 to $135,300 , plus incentive cash and stock opportunities (based on eligibility). The starting pay takes into account characteristics of the job, such as required skills and where the job is performed. Final, individual compensation is decided based on demonstrated experience.
