Senior Engineer, Packaging - US - Apex, NC The Blueprint (Role Profile) Reporting to the Sr. Manager of Packaging Engineering, R&D, this position will focus on the development of innovative new product packaging including, storage cases, disposable injection molded plastic packaging, thermoform plastics, displays/promo packaging, blisters and paperboard product packaging to support the North American Hand Tools business located in our Apex, North Carolina facility. The successful candidate will have frequent interaction with the global Apex Product Design and manufacturing teams in North America and Asia, as well as Apex Tool Group's global supplier base, to deliver new packaging solutions on time and within budget with the appropriate performance. In addition, the Staff Packaging Engineer will: The Build (Responsibilities): • Design, Develop and introduce innovative new packaging concepts based on understanding of end user needs and business requirements. • Research new packaging processes, techniques, and materials to provide innovative and cost-effective packaging concepts and solutions. • Identify and implement cost reduction and value analysis initiatives for packaging of existing products/packages. • Support new product launches to determine the feasibility of new packaging related to cost, timing and manufacturability, defines risks associated with assigned new product packaging concepts. • Establish project timelines for all packaging activities to support the NPD toll gate process. • Create prototypes of new packaging concepts and evaluates performance characteristics against targets using established test procedures. • Create engineering drawings and specifications for all new or modified packaging components. • Collaborate with Procurement colleagues and ensure supplier can maintain integrity of selected package. • Work in partnership with the Creative team to ensure packaging meets established brand standards. • Ensures design criteria are feasible, recommends alternatives, and issues final specifications. • Maintain thorough knowledge of packaging components, materials and processes used for all ATG product packaging. • High level of interaction with global team members including Product Marketing, Manufacturing, Industrial Design, Product Engineering, Sourcing, and other key cross-functional team members. • Collaborate with Marketing, Manufacturing, Sourcing, Testing and other related functional areas to ensure that project related KPI's are consistently met or exceeded • Mentor and develop junior packaging engineers to grow talent within the organization. The Toolbox (Qualifications): • BS Engineering required (Plastics or Packaging preferred). • At least 5 years of packaging engineering experience. • Solid grasp of all packaging materials and their manufacturing processes. • Ability to collaborate seamlessly with cross functional teams and can fully explain and demonstrate the "why". • Uses data to ensure work is detailed and accurate. • Ability to lead a VAVE event around packaging and packaging processes. • Experience/knowledge with development and design of product packaging for a consumer goods product line(s). • Advanced written & verbal communication skills, excellent project management skills and advanced presentation skills. • Ability to use Creo or similar 3D CAD programs for packaging design/documentation. • Knowledge of ISTA/ASTM package testing protocols. • Ability to establish a positive reputation with all stakeholders and engage team members to achieve goals. • Support projects with international team members and be flexible and able to lead communication calls during evening hours. • Ability to understand issues domestically and internationally and communicate effectively. • Ability to travel approximately 10-15% domestic with occasional international travel At Apex Tool Group ( we're passionate about innovation.
