The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Richmond District - Petersburg Residency is seeking qualified Highway Maintenance Laborers to fill vacancies at our Prince George Area Headquarters. These positions will assist with repairs and maintenance of State roadways and their surrounding right of ways. You will perform highway maintenance activities such as patching potholes, litter and debris removal and tree trimming, as well as laboring on larger roadway construction projects such as culvert replacements. Duties of the position will include extensive use of hand and power tools such as shovels, rakes, blowers, tampers, and chainsaws, as well as operation of medium to heavy duty equipment. Performs manual labor, practices safety at all times, and works as part of a team as well as independently. The positions are designated as essential and, as such, all duties associated with the job are required during emergency situations and requires work outside of normal hours including nights, weekends and holidays. VDOT will determine when essential positions are required to report. Additional positions may be filled from this recruitment within 90 days. Minimum Qualifications Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures. Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand-held and power tools. Skill in the operation and maintenance of light and medium equipment used for highway maintenance and repair. Ability to perform mowing operations Ability to perform manual labor tasks (i.e. flagging, debris pickup and etc.) Ability to read and to follow oral and written instructions. Valid driver's license required. Additional Considerations High school diploma or GED preferred; equivalent experience or training may substitute for education. Experience in equipment operation and performing preventative maintenance. Experience performing roadway maintenance and/or construction activities. Experience with emergency operations to include snow removal, storms, and accident clean-up.
