Position Overview The Design Engineer 1 (Driveworks) is a vital member of the R&D's engineered-to-order (ETO) team at Wanzl North America (WNA), tasked with developing innovative and cost-effective design solutions that cater to a broad range of product lines. The role involves leveraging SolidWorks and Driveworks to automate the design and quoting process, enabling rapid production of designs and facilitating quick response to client inquiries. The Design Engineer I will work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure that the solutions provided meet both client needs and company standards. Additionally, the Design Engineer I will undertake a variety of responsibilities within the R&D department, encompassing design, research, prototyping, engineering documentation, estimating, and process improvement initiatives. Duties and Responsibilities: Develop 3D models and 2D drawings using SolidWorks, applying Driveworks for design automation to expedite the quoting and design process. Generate accurate Bill of Materials (BOMs) for diverse product lines, utilizing automation tools to ensure efficiency and accuracy. Ensure product reliability and functionality by selecting appropriate parts, materials, and manufacturing processes. Validate design concepts through comprehensive analysis and testing, including the creation of specialized test fixtures and instrumentation as needed. Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including sales, manufacturing, and product management, to meet project objectives efficiently. Participate in value analysis, cost analysis, and quality improvement initiatives, identifying opportunities to enhance product performance and reduce costs. Rapidly develop and iterate full-scale prototypes to confirm design requirements and functionality. Evaluate new technologies and perform competitive product analysis to inform design decisions and strategic direction. Skills and Experience: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field. 0-2 years of experience in product development or engineering (internships or co-op experience considered). Proficiency in 3D solid modeling, preferably SolidWorks, with experience in using Driveworks for automating design tasks. Familiarity with other CAD software such as SketchUp, AutoCAD, and data management tools like PDM/Vault. Knowledge of manufacturing processes, materials, and quality control principles. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to make data-driven recommendations. Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and adapt to changing priorities. A proactive approach to project management and a commitment to meeting deadlines. 20% travel required.
