PPO is responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of these units. PPO is a fully integrated organization with operating and support services capabilities. The Power Engineering Department (PED) within PPO develops engineered solutions for the steam and combustion turbine units, and works closely with power plant and support services personnel during the engineering and construction phases of specific projects. PED is also actively involved with new project development including, but not limited to, utility scale battery storage, solar and simple cycle combustion turbine generators. The Power Engineering Dept. (PED) is a multi-disciplined team of engineers who are self-directed and empowered to develop and implement solutions on a wide range of PPO and Corporate initiatives. PED Engineers have project ownership from inception through operation. PED is proud of how the organization engineers solutions, embraces new technologies and collaborates with others to provide successful projects.National Grid is hiring a Lead Engineer for our Hicksville, NY plant PurposeThe Mechanical Engineer reports to the Reliability Engineering Manager in PED and will support internal and external team members collaborating on new projects and improvements to our existing fleet of steam and combustion turbine units on Long Island. This position is responsible to inspect and evaluate power boilers, pressure vessels, chemical tanks, fuel oil tank, high energy piping systems, piping supports and mechanical components. The person in this role is responsible to assess and implement improvements to the existing steam and combustion turbine units as part of the capital improvement and maintenance processes. Project assessments shall include, but are not limited to, mechanical structural analysis, mechanical design options, material analysis, business alternatives, cost/benefit analysis, risk analysis and project performance evaluations. This position will include project engineer, project design and project manager responsibilities on projects. This role is responsible to develop mechanical and materials specifications, standards and procedures on projects. This position is an essential contributor to our goal of asset management and technology Accountabilities•Reports to the Reliability Engineering Manager of the Power Engineering Dept.•Perform material/metallurgical root cause failure analysis and formulate corrective actions.•Manage condition assessment inspections of high energy piping boiler components, pressure vessels, mechanical equipment, fuel oil storage tanks and chemical storage tanks.•Familiar with mechanical analysis, structural analysis and finite element analysis.•Perform piping surveys (hot and cold piping/support inspections).•Specify and evaluate nondestructive testing.•For new equipment installations, work closely with plant staffs and engineers to establish piping and mechanical installation. •Serve as the project engineer and/or project manager during the design, construction and operation of projects on existing generating assets and new energy development opportunities.•Provide technical support and troubleshooting of field installations.•Perform engineering calculations in accordance with latest codes and industry standards.•Develop specifications, standards and procedures for projects.•Develop man-hour, material and service cost estimates.•Perform field surveys to support design development and as-built conditions.Qualifications•10-15 years of related power plant or equivalent experience.•Experience inspecting piping and structural installation work.•Experience with pipe stress analysis application programs.•Knowledge or experience with failure analysis of ferrous and nonferrous materials.•Knowledge or experience with welding technology and preparing repair welding procedures.•Experience with ASME Section IX and AWS D1.1 welding codes.•Knowledge of power station codes and standards (National Board Codes, ASME Section I, V, VIII, IX and B31.1; API 575, 650, 651, 652, 653).•Experience with specifying nondestructive examination (NDE) requirements to assure compliance of components to applicable code and specification requirements. •Experience with power generating equipment and support systems.•Experience in project cost/benefit and risk analysis.•Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or materials engineering is required.
