HDR is in need of a Water/Wastewater/Water Resources Intern to join our Water Business Group team in Charlotte, NC, Winston-Salem, NC, Raleigh, NC, or Greenville, SC. Ideal candidate will have a technical interest in water and wastewater pump stations and pipelines, treatment, water resources or utility management. The Intern will be responsible for assisting with projects through planning, design and construction phases. Project types could include gravity sanitary sewers and force mains, water distribution and transmission pipelines, water and wastewater pump stations and treatment, planning studies and related infrastructure projects. Additional duties could include support of technical investigation and analysis of various detailed studies and preparing reports relating to stormwater management, drainage system infrastructure, watershed and water supply planning and other environmental matters in the area of water resource management. Provide hydrologic/hydraulic modeling support for stormwater improvement projects, master plans, flood studies, and similar water resource management projects. The Water/Wastewater/Water Resources Intern will support and advise civil engineers, utilities management staff and technical staff in other disciplines and sections, complete technical analysis, write reports and technical memos, coordinate with subconsultants, support senior staff to maintain project schedules and budgets, and produce documents in accordance with project scopes and quality program procedures. May have periodic contact with clients regarding ongoing projects and tasks. May require occasional field construction inspection. Additional Responsibilities: Engage on real-world experience on exciting projects Connect with recent college graduates and our company leaders through mentoring and young professionals programs Apply standard engineering techniques and procedures Perform assignments under the direct supervision of a professional or Project Manager Accompany Professional Engineers on project tours Review water/wastewater project plans and specifications on current projects Review and create overall project diagrams and/or process diagrams to be able to understand and verify processes for treatment and conveyance facilities Work in excel to produce or verify design calculations Write and review technical memorandums and reports Perform other duties as needed Preferred Qualifications Enrolled in a BS or MS in Civil or Environmental Engineering or similar program. Coursework in watershed management including erosion control, water quality, drainage collection system design, stormwater BMP design, and natural channel design. Coursework in hydrologic/hydraulic modeling for storm, sanitary, water distribution systems using software such as HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, SWMM, HydraFlow, or other similar models. Possess excellent communication skills and thrive working in a team environment. Water/wastewater/water resources project experience. Coursework in hydrology and hydraulics applications, the design and analysis of stormwater management facilities, storm sewers and watersheds preferred. Experience using Microsoft Office Suite and AutoCAD preferred. Preference given to local candidates.
