Introduction The State of Wisconsin, Department of Military Affairs (DMA) is hiring two Heavy Equipment Operators positions. These positions are located at Truax Air Base in Madison. If you have already applied for these positions in the past six months, you do not need to apply again. These positions are full-time and typically work daytime hours. The exact schedules will be determined with the finalists upon job offers. These are project positions and they do not lead to permanent employment. The positions have an anticipated duration through to July 1, 2025, however it could be extended for up to 4 years. Candidates chosen for a project position may be considered for permanent positions in the near future if any permanent positions become available. Project employees seeking permanent positions would be required to apply through the standard application process. Employees in project positions of less than 1 year in duration are not eligible for the State of Wisconsin health insurance coverage, and are not eligible to participate in the Wisconsin Retirement System. Extension of this project position past that date is dependent on funding. Additionally, this position may become permanent at a later date. Position Summary Heavy Equipment Operators at Truax Field work under general supervision of the Building and Grounds Supervisor using specialized heavy equipment to maintain and repair concrete and asphalt on all aircraft pavements, roads, parking lots and sidewalks. Equipment includes skid steers (with multiple attachments), front end loaders, backhoes, rollers, Oshkosh runway brooms, and dump trucks to perform duties including but not limited to trenching, grading, runway cleaning, pavement repair, snow removal, etc. In addition, these positions may complete construction projects performing base improvements using equipment for trenching/excavating/backfilling for underground utilities such as water lines, sewer lines, electrical, fiber optic cable, and phone/communication lines. Salary Information Starting pay is $25.22/ hr. This position is in the 06-14 pay schedule/range. For current permanent state employees, pay will be set in accordance with the State Compensation Plan. The Department of Military Affairs does not sponsor work visas at the time of hire or anytime during employment. Job Details Must possess or be eligible to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license as a condition of continued employment. Required to possess or be able to obtain a commercial driver's license (CDL) as a condition of continued employment. Must be able to obtain and maintain a military driver's license as a condition of continued employment. You will be trained on specific vehicles and will receive assistance to obtain the licensure if you do not already possess. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. In order to gain access to the military facilities and to determine whether the circumstances of any conviction may be related to the job being filled, DMA will conduct a comprehensive background check. In addition, the position requires a Common Access Card (CAC). A CAC requires successful completion of a Department of Defense investigation and an additional more in-depth federal background check, for gaining access to federal computer systems, restricted locations, or classified information. Qualifications Candidates who meet minimum qualifications will have the following: Experience with using multiple pieces of heavy equipment or farm equipment. Heavy Equipment Operator license or certification from a technical college or trade school. In addition to the minimum qualifications, well-qualified candidates will also have the following preferred qualifications: Experience operating the following pieces of equipment: Crane, Grader, Dozer, Skid Steer, Backhoe, Excavator, End Loader, Dump Truck, Rubber Tire Roller, Water Distributor, Truck Semi (Drop deck trailer, Tilt bed trailer, Flatbed trailer), Runway snow sweeper. Experience with construction, maintenance and/or repair projects using best practices for following established grades and elevations.
