Position Type: Transportation/Bus Driver Date Posted: 8/20/2024 Location: Sycamore Transportation Office Date Available: 9/3/2024 District: Sycamore Community Schools - website GENERAL DESCRIPTION Safely drives a school vehicle transporting students to and from school, sporting events and educational activities by performing the following duties. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Maintains and operates district equipment in a safe and sensible manner. Completes a pre-trip inspection of school bus or any vehicle before moving the vehicle to determine it is in safe operating condition. Assumes responsibility of identifying mechanical problems of a vehicle. Reports any mechanical defect or vehicle problem to the transportation manager or head mechanic. Drives the school bus over a prescribed route in a safe manner and be able to re-route in case of unforeseen problems. Assumes responsibility for following a time schedule. Assigns seats to students and keeps a seating chart for each route. Write route sheets, bus maintenance reports, conduct reports and other reports as applicable. Assumes responsibility for controlling student behavior and asserting authority in a non-aggressive manner when applicable. Assumes responsibility of calmly evacuating a vehicle during an emergency situation. Attends workshops and meetings as required by the district. Assumes responsibility of maintaining up to date knowledge of technology utilized by the district. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES This job has no supervisory responsibilities. QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be a minimum of 21 years of age with five years of licensed driving experience. May not have more than two (2) points on drivers abstract. LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to read, write and comprehend simple directions, short correspondence and memos. Ability to write routine reports and documents. Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, colleagues and administration. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from students, parents, agencies, teachers or members of the school community. Ability to effectively present information to administration, staff, public groups, and/or Board of Education. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS Current Commercial Driver's License is required. Must be able to obtain insurance to drive a school bus. Must be physically cable of handling physically and mentally handicapped students or any student incapacitated. First aid training and CPR certification is required. Must possess all personnel qualifications as outlined in (B) of the Ohio Administrative Code and Board adopted job description for "school bus driver" by the desired start date. OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES Must possess basic skills in reading, writing and math for the purpose of making necessary measurements, reading of gauges and instruments, mixing chemicals or other related items as applicable. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out written or oral instructions. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations that may arise. Ability to maintain composure under stressful conditions. Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community. Ability to use computers where applicable. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
