JOB TITLE:Operating Room Registered Nurse (OR RN) Circulator and Recovery (PACU RN) Department:Operations Reports to:Practice Manager FLSA Status:Non-exempt Date Prepared:10/10/2024 SUMMARY We are seeking a highly dedicated, skilled and compassionate Operating Room Registered Nurse (OR RN) Circulator to join our plastic surgery practice. The OR RN Circulator will play a crucial role in ensuring the safety, comfort, and well-being of patients undergoing plastic surgery procedures in our operating room. This position requires strong attention to detail, following physician instructions and the ability to collaborate effectively with the surgical team. Perianesthesia nurses (recovery nurses) are responsible for the delivery of safe, effective and quality patient-centered care of patients in the post anesthesia care unit (PACU) and other perioperative areas for all patient populations. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Other duties may be assigned) Preoperative Preparation: Collaborate with the surgical team to ensure proper patient positioning, equipment setup, and sterile field preparation. Verify patient identification, surgical site, and procedure to ensure accuracy and patient safety. Assist in the administration of preoperative medications and anesthesia as directed by the anesthesia provider. Intraoperative Support: Serve as a patient advocate, ensuring patient comfort and safety throughout the surgical procedure. Monitor vital signs, anesthesia levels, and patient response during surgery, reporting any abnormalities to the surgical team. Anticipate the needs of the surgical team and assist with surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment as necessary. Practice aseptic technique and infection control protocols throughout the procedure. Documentation and Communication: Accurately document intraoperative events, medications administered, and patient responses in the electronic medical record. Communicate effectively with the surgical team, anesthesia provider, and other healthcare professionals to ensure coordinated care and optimal patient outcomes. Provide thorough handoff communication to postoperative nursing staff to facilitate continuity of care. Postoperative Care: Assist with the transfer of the patient to the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) or recovery area, providing comprehensive handoff communication to PACU nursing staff. Act as an advocate for the patient. Maintain privacy, dignity and confidentiality of the patient and health information. Perform proper post-operative patient assessment: respiratory, cardiovascular, neurological, hemodynamic stability, temperature, pain and nausea. Develop an individualized perianesthesia plan of care. Maintains awareness of comfort and safety needs of patient. Interpret information accurately from various monitors, observes patient, records significant conditions and reactions, and notifies supervisor or physician of patient's condition and reaction to drugs and significant incidents. Implement plan of care for patients after surgery and anesthesia respiratory/airway management pain control/comfort management nausea control cardiovascular/blood pressure control fluid/electrolyte and IV maintenance proper positioning protection from infection maintain or return patient to normothermic status manage patient's other co-morbid conditions if applicable Perform interventions to maintain the integrity of the patient wound and tissue perfusion. Administer ordered medication for per doctors' orders correctly by implementing the 7-rights of safe medications practices (right patient, medication, dose, time, route, indication and documentation). Understanding and administrations of ordered medications and treatments. Communicate the patient's current status with the surgeon and anesthesiologist throughout the perioperative care. Evaluation and assessment of patient toward attaining desired outcomes. Ensure patient has appropriate caregiver to take patient home and care for them. Assess caregiver's level of understanding of provided education and instructions. Educating patient and caregiver of patient upon discharge regarding wound management, nutritional management, medication management, pain and comfort management, and expected psychosocial responses. Apply the relevant scoring system/discharge criteria for patient discharge Proper documentation of patient assessment, medication delivery and care completely, accurately and legibly. Emergency Care Maintain emergency equipment and understand use of such Emergency management of patient as needed. Respond to life saving situations based upon nursing standards, policies, procedures and protocol. Transfer care as needed. Maintain required competencies related to emergency care including current ACLS & BLS certification, if required. Maintaining cleanliness and preparation of the recovery area per AORN standards maintenance cleaning stocking of medical supplies, nutritional supplies, medications assist in laundry as needed Understand the importance of cost containment Maintain PACU equipment and understand use of such Maintaining narcotic drug count and understand DEA regulations for narcotic responsibilities Understand the importance of avoiding drug diversion and report any suspicious activities. Understand the importance of and participate in risk management activities Participate in quality improvement activities Participate in performance appraisal process Maintain required competencies Understand and comply with all HIPPA, OSHA and biohazard rules, standards, regulations and policies Quality Improvement and Compliance: Participate in quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient safety, satisfaction, and clinical outcomes, including QUADA certification. Adhere to all regulatory requirements, including but not limited to HIPAA, OSHA, and facility-specific policies and procedures. Participate in ongoing education and training to maintain clinical competence and stay abreast of best practices in perioperative nursing care. Adhere to facility policies and protocols. Have proper etiquette for assigned jobs and respect all our patients. Advanced knowledge of the types of surgical procedures and treatments offered at the practice. QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in the state of practice. Associate degree in nursing (ADN) at minimum. Prefer (but not required) a minimum of two years of experience in perioperative nursing, preferably in a plastic surgery or cosmetic surgery setting. Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)(if required per accreditation standards). SKILLS/ABILITIES Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Commitment to providing compassionate, patient-centered care. PHYSICAL DEMANDS While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, and to talk and hear. Employees may be occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, or crouch. Employees must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds along with pushing and pulling on higher BMI patients. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. WORK ENVIRONMENT While performing the duties of this job, employees may be exposed to risk of infectious diseases when interacting with patients and/or family members. The employee may be occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, fumes, or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
