The Pharmacy Director is responsible for the overall leadership, strategy, and operations of the pharmacy department, including the hospital pharmacy, infusion center, and community retail pharmacy at St. Agnes. The role ensures the safe, efficient, and cost-effective delivery of pharmaceutical services while maintaining compliance with state and federal regulations. The Pharmacy Director will collaborate with medical staff, department heads, and other key stakeholders to enhance patient care, optimize pharmacy operations, and manage financial performance. Key Responsibilities: Pharmacy Operations Management: Oversee all pharmacy operations, including inpatient hospital services, the infusion center, and community retail pharmacy. Ensure compliance with state, federal, and healthcare regulations, including medication safety standards. Develop, implement, and enforce policies and procedures for the safe and efficient distribution of medications. Ensure accurate preparation, compounding, dispensing, and storage of medications across all departments. Leadership and Staff Development: Provide strong leadership to the pharmacy team, including hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating staff performance. Mentor and guide pharmacists and technicians, fostering a positive work environment focused on growth and continuous improvement. Promote professional development opportunities and ensure staff are up to date with continuing education and certifications. Financial Management: Develop and manage the department's budget, ensuring financial performance aligns with organizational goals. Implement cost-saving strategies such as formulary management, medication usage review, and purchasing practices to optimize operational costs. Oversee inventory management, purchasing, and contract negotiations to maintain cost-effective supply chain practices. Clinical Excellence & Patient Care: Ensure the pharmacy services provide high-quality care, supporting optimal patient outcomes through medication management and patient education. Collaborate with medical, nursing, and administrative staff to ensure medication therapy aligns with patient treatment plans. Provide guidance on drug utilization, formulary decisions, and therapeutic recommendations. Infusion Center Oversight: Ensure the safe and efficient delivery of intravenous medications in the infusion center, focusing on oncology, rheumatology, and other specialties. Coordinate closely with nursing and medical staff to ensure optimal therapeutic outcomes for infusion patients. Community Retail Pharmacy Oversight: Oversee operations of the community retail pharmacy, ensuring high-quality service and patient education. Maintain compliance with retail pharmacy laws, patient counseling standards, and community outreach programs. Regulatory Compliance & Quality Assurance: Ensure compliance with all pharmacy-related regulations from entities such as The Joint Commission, FDA, DEA, and the state Board of Pharmacy. Maintain strict adherence to quality control procedures, particularly around sterile compounding (USP 797/800), drug dispensing, and patient safety protocols. Lead internal audits and continuous quality improvement initiatives to maintain high standards in patient care and safety. Collaboration & Communication: Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to integrate pharmacy services into overall hospital care plans and community health initiatives. Serve as the primary pharmacy liaison to hospital administration, medical staff, and community stakeholders. Communicate effectively with all departments to address challenges and implement solutions that improve service delivery. Qualifications: Education: Required: Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) or Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.S. Pharmacy) degree from an accredited college of pharmacy. Preferred: Master's in Business Administration (MBA) or Healthcare Administration (MHA). Licensure & Certifications: Active and unrestricted pharmacy license in the state of Maryland. Board Certification in Pharmacotherapy (BCPS) or a related pharmacy specialty is preferred. Experience: Minimum of2 years of experience in hospital pharmacy leadership. Previous experience managing infusion services and retail pharmacy operations is preferred. Experience in financial management, budgeting, and pharmacy operations oversight is required. Skills & Abilities: Strong leadership and team-building skills, with the ability to drive a culture of safety and efficiency. Excellent problem-solving, decision-making, and strategic thinking abilities. Strong understanding of pharmacy regulations, hospital operations, and retail pharmacy management. Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams.
