The Mining/Geotechnical Engineering Internship provides the opportunity for the individual to learn and become familiar with the mining and aggregate industry. The Mining/Geotechnical Engineering Intern is responsible for supporting the Mine Planning and Geology team by conducting a thorough study of underground pillar stability. The Intern will be required to spend time with other departments to gain a broad perspective of NESL activities. A mentor will be assigned to the Intern and will remain with the Intern for the duration of the internship. The Intern will be responsible for learning and adhering to required safety protocols within each assignment. Essential Functions Pillar Stability Study (75%) Complete MSHA training for underground. Conduct stability study on each pillar (>100) in the underground mine using S-Pillar. Record Rock Mass Rating assessments of each pillar to be used in an RMR block model. Standardize record-keeping and develop program for future updates. Integrate results into Micromine software for Mine Planning team. Assist in mapping geologic features exposed in ribs and roof. Update geologic model based on mapping. Assist with bore scoping and logging. Life of Mine Report (15%) Assist in generating background information for Life of Mine Reports. Cross-functional Tours (10%) Based on the intern's interests, spend time with other departments (Environmental, Operations, etc.) to gain understanding of the complexity of the aggregate industry. Other Functions May perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications Must be actively enrolled in degree program in geology, engineering, or related field. Experience with AutoCAD, Carlson, or other engineering or mapping software preferred, but not required. Must have strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Must possess strong attention to detail, good organizational skills with the ability to ensure accurate work. Ability to work independently but as part of a team concept.
