How your work would contribute to our organization and the Twin Cities region: Metro Transit's Skilled Helper Commuter Rail position repairs and maintains Northstar Commuter Rail non-revenue vehicles, equipment, parts and components, and shop support equipment. This position will also perform light railroad track maintenance, adjustments, and provides support to the Electronic Technicians at Northstar. This posting is open to both internal and external applicants, however, internal candidates will receive priority. Hourly Pay Range: For candidates newly hired into the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) contract, starting wage is set by the ATU contract. Internal hires will follow Metropolitan Council's union wage guidelines. Hire: $26.11 After year one: $29.84 (based on ATU salary rates starting 8/1/2024) After year two: $33.57 (Subject to contract change, based on ATU salary rates starting 8/1/2024) After year three: $37.30 (Subject to contract change, based on ATU salary rates starting 8/1/2024) What you would do in this job Performs preventative maintenance, inspections, and repairs on non-revenue vehicles and equipment; greases bushings and bearings, changes oil and other fluids, changes filters as part of inspection process, changes batteries Uses hand tools, grease gun, fluid dispensers, torque wrenches, etc Cuts metal, wood, and other materials to repair non-revenue vehicles and equipment Performs monthly light track and switch maintenance such as weed control, track joint and fastener repairs, rail-yard snow removal, switch and operating stand lubrication and adjustment, and replaces defective ties and track fasteners Operates small tools and equipment (rail saw, rail drill, and spiking equipment) Assists Designated Track Inspector for monthly walking track inspections as needed Assists with track alignment, gauging operation, and repairing tracks at turnouts and at-grade crossings Assists in maintenance and inspection of switch heaters Assists with inventory of spare parts to ensure parts are available to carry out track maintenance Establishes roadway work protection for facilities work at support and public facilities for colleagues and contractors as required Assists Electronic Technician staff in performing preventative maintenance and repairs of all station equipment such as Electronic Destination Signs, Communications Systems boxes, and Public Address Systems; assists staff with other electronic or communications equipment as required Attends safety and training meetings Assists in emergency situations Performs miscellaneous shop work (fuel and clean vehicles, direct traffic, empty trash, fill windshield wash, drive forklift, move recycling bins, measure fluid tanks using dip stick, move non-revenue vehicles and equipment, etc.) Cleans work areas using power sweepers and scrubbers, pressure washers, chemicals, soap, and floor dry Performs snow removal and operates snow removal equipment (self-propelled and handheld removal equipment); assists other agencies with removal as required Performs other duties as assigned or apparent What education and experience are required for this job (minimum qualifications) Any of the following combinations of experience (in mechanics/truck, bus, industrial, or other heavy-duty equipment repair) AND completed education (degree field of study in automotive, diesel mechanics, or closely related): High school diploma/GED AND two (2) years of experience Associate's degree or two-year vocational program License Requirements: Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record Forklift certification within one (1) month after hired What additional skills and experience would be helpful in this job (desired qualifications): Experience using scan tools and multi-meters to diagnose and troubleshoot electrical problems Ability to demonstrate an understanding of mechanical systems and processes Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals Ability to promote an equitable, positive, and respectful work environment that values diversity among all employees; requires tact, courtesy, and cooperation in dealing with others What knowledge, skills, and abilities you should have within the first six months on the job: Knowledge of diesel and gasoline engine troubleshooting and repair; mechanical aptitude for all aspects of vehicle repair Knowledge of electrical motor troubleshooting and repair Ability to operate company vehicles and equipment safely Ability to learn and use agency's materials management system (TxBase) Ability to provide and use own hand tools as needed to complete work assignments Ability to diagnose engine, hydraulic, and electrical issues Ability to work with diesel fumes and harsh cleaning compounds Ability to write routine reports and correspondence Ability to read, write, and communicate in English and record number legibly What you can expect from us: We offer the opportunity to make a difference and positively influence the Twin Cities metropolitan area. Work Environment : Work is performed in a rail maintenance facility and commuter rail stations. This position will require working in wet or hot, humid non-weather conditions, and in high precarious places. This position may also require working in outdoor weather conditions, extreme cold, risk of electrical shock, and work with explosives. Physical Requirements : This position may require standing, walking, talking or hearing using hands to finger, handle or feeling and reaching with hands and arms, bending and twisting at the neck and waist, working at heights and climbing ladders and/or stairs, lifting up to fifty (50) pounds. May require working near moving parts or equipment, in the presence of fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and vibrations.
