This position safely performs a wide variety of diagnostics, preventive maintenance, and repair functions on gasoline and diesel engines, electric motors, and specialized off-road and construction equipment primarily in the City shop, and in the field as necessary. Repairs include work on engines, transmission, brake, electrical, hydraulic, and computerized control systems. This position occasionally designs and fabricates parts and modifies vehicles for specialized use. Reporting to the Fleet Manager, this position prioritizes and performs work independently and under intermittent supervision. The role requires substantial technical knowledge of equipment and vehicle maintenance and repair in accordance with specific procedures and established practices. Essential Functions Makes emergency and regular maintenance repairs in the field or the shop on equipment such as backhoes, excavators, graders, automobiles, dump trucks, street sweepers, hydraulic systems, compressors, and generators; as well as replacing and repairing tires, belts, axles, hydraulic cylinders, carburetors, electrical wiring, and starters. Diagnoses malfunctions such as fuel or ignition failures, and effects repairs by adjusting or replacing parts. Replaces engines; removes, dismantles, repairs, and installs automatic and manual transmissions. Designs and fabricates parts as necessary to accomplish repairs; performs welding as needed. Services vehicles with oil, changes filters, installs anti-freeze, lubricates vehicles, adjusts brakes, and other similar servicing and tune-up procedures. Orders and maintains supplies and records for projects, as directed. Cleans and maintains City Shop and work area. Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications EDUCATION AND TRAINING High School Diploma, or G.E.D., specialized training in automotive and/or heavy equipment systems repair, and four years experience in vehicle maintenance and repair, including fabrication of specialized parts or equipment; or any combination of education and experience which would provide the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge, and ability required to perform the job. LICENSES AND CERTIFICATION Valid Washington State Commercial Driver's License; Class A (with air brake restriction removed) including hazardous and tank endorsements Valid first aid and CPR certification or ability to obtain within six months. Valid flagging certification or ability to obtain within six months. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Considerable knowledge of gasoline and diesel engines, automatic and manual transmissions, hydraulics, shop techniques, welding, and cutting. Knowledge of metal parts fabrication requiring welding, cutting, and other fabrication techniques. Ability to read, understand, and apply shop manual information and tune-up specifications. Ability to diagnose and repair major and minor mechanical and electrical defects in vehicles and heavy equipment. Ability to prioritize and organize work assignments. Skill in operating a variety of hand and power tools used in automotive maintenance work. Ability to work with electrical wiring and distinguish between different wires and electrical connections. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and vendors. Ability to fabricate various specialized parts and equipment for a variety of vehicles, including police vehicles. Provide own tools. Heavy Equipment Mechanics provide personal tool storage and tools. Incumbents provide and must be equipped with an adequate variety of hand, specialty, and power tools to allow them to complete common tasks associated with the position. WORKING CONDITIONS Work is performed primarily indoors in an equipment repair shop exposing the employee to dirt, grease, noxious fumes chemicals, and hazards related to working with and around a variety of equipment, working in confined spaces, bending, twisting, kneeling, crawling, lifting of heavy objects. Occasional field work exposes the employee to inclement weather and traffic hazards.
