Visit /html/hhc/lincoln. Job Description PURPOSE OF POSITION : Under general supervision, delegates responsibility to nursing personnel for direct and indirect nursing care of patients. Coordinates the development, implementation, and evaluation of the nursing perioperative regimen. Assists in determining necessary resources to provide for patient care needs. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Maintains a positive people-based image with other employees, patients and visitors. Facilitates necessary processes in OR rooms to promote the shortest possible OR turn-over time. Ensures that the patient's rights are met as identified by the institution. Evaluates staff's performance annually in a timely manner as required by the institution. Receives the report from the Head Nurse of the preceding shift. Both Head Nurse makes rounds to ensure the cleanliness and readiness of the OR suites. Meets with the supervisor daily to inform her of all emergencies, cases in progress, and all problems/incidents. Assures that all equipment and supplies necessary for the day's schedule of cases are available and in good condition. Assign staff to operating rooms and special assignments to meet the operation schedule on that tour. Adapts work assignments around changes in staff availability. Informs OR supervisor/deputy director of perioperative service of all needs of the unit. Makes out monthly schedules for staff assigned to the area, ensuring proper utilization of personnel. Evaluates the activity of nursing personnel within the operating room. Discusses in morning report with nursing personnel operative schedule for the day, communicates information that needs to be shared, discusses problems, and finds possible solutions. Interprets the nursing staff policies, procedures, and other regulations of Lincoln Hospital and the Department of Nursing. Works closely with the supervisor in the assessment of problems and their solutions. Ensures that all patients scheduled for surgery are in the operating room at least thirty (30) minutes prior to scheduled surgery. Enforces the infection control policies and guidelines. Makes a list of special instruments/trays needed for the following day's schedule and sends a copy to the sterile processing unit to prepare. Arrange for needed supplies/implants ordered from outside to be delivered to the OR at least 24 hours prior to scheduled surgery. Assists in direct patient care as needed Scrub/Circulate). Collaborates with the surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and other health professionals and disciplines in coordinating the care of the patients in the operating room. Coordinates general flow and functions within the operating room area. Acts as a resource person to the staff and other members of the health care team within the operating room area, and on the surgical units when necessary. Makes certain that the office aide calls for the patients to be brought into the operating room on a timely basis. Documents accurately as per policy and procedures. Identifies personal learning needs and seeks opportunities for self-development. Maintains professional competence through participation in continuing education and other appropriate learning experiences. Completes own continuing education record. Acts as preceptor for new staff members and other staff who needs orientation in the particular specialty. Minimum Qualifications 1. A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State; and 2. Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA); and 3. One (1) year of experience as a registered nurse.
