Salary : $47,677.92 - $62,684.76 Annually Location : Montebello, CA Job Type: Full-Time Job Number: 24-10-HPS-VM Department: Various Opening Date: 10/11/2024 Closing Date: 10/26/2024 4:00 PM Pacific Description Position Information : This is an Open Competitive recruitment to create an eligibility list for current and future vacancies. Incumbents in this classification are expected to work seven (7) hours a day, five (5) days a week, and ten (10) months a year. Candidates must submit proof of all required documents to be considered for the examination process. GENERAL PURPOSE Under general supervision, performs clerical and technical duties associated with students' health and welfare, including first aid and CPR. Under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse, delivers specialized health care procedures and medical treatments on an as needed basis, to students with exceptional needs in a school environment; and performs related duties as assigned. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS An incumbent in this class performs a variety of specialized health care procedures and medical treatments for students with exceptional needs in a school setting. A Health Procedures Specialist is distinguished from a Student Health Assistant in that incumbents in the former class perform more difficult health care treatments and procedures requiring specialized training. Duties ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. Performs procedures such as tracheostomy care, tracheotomy tube replacement, gastrostomy tube feeding and care, clean intermittent urethral and abdominal stoma (Mitrofanoff) catheterization, colostomy and/or ileostomy care, oxygen administration, including monitoring flow and control of oxygen level, administer or assist students with prescribed medication during school hours, including the administration of Diastat (rectal Valium) for severe seizure disorder; utilizes specialized equipment as appropriate for student and situation. Such equipment may necessitate specialized training conducted by a Registered Nurse. Performs First Aid and/or CPR as needed until Paramedics or other medical assistance is available. Assists students with diabetic treatment and carbohydrate counting. Documents daily the specialized health care procedures performed on a student, including Medi-Cal and other insurance billing. Updates and maintains medical records of assigned student in accordance with HIPPA regulations. Assists with the lifting of students into and out of wheelchairs, braces, and other orthopedic equipment; positions students during eating and feeding, and toileting and diapering. Accompanies students transported by bus to and from school and provides assistance during activities as appropriate; accompanies and assists certificated personnel during the transporting or instructing of pupils in community based settings. Performs or assists a Registered Nurse in performing basic nursing care and protocols in the School Health Office. Assists certificated staff in establishing and maintaining a clean, safe and pleasant learning environment; supports teachers in the classroom by providing assistance in the areas of physical fitness development, personal hygiene, and the development of vocational and social skills. Initiates and completes accident and/or incident reports in accordance with HIPPA regulations. Provides input to teachers and certificated staff with regard to planning and scheduling school activities for assigned students. Provides care to medically fragile students in care capacity, during school hours and school sponsored events. Other Duties: Performs general clerical duties related to health and medical welfare of the students. Provides individualized school related services according to the student's specific need and/or IEP, under the direction of certificated staff. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of : Basic first aid, CPR and other established health care practices and procedures. Accepted methods and principles of personal hygiene. Basic concepts of child development and behavior. Correct English usage and good communication techniques. Applicable laws, codes, rules and regulations related to assigned activities. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy. Ability to : Administer first aid and CPR in accordance with District policies and procedures. Lift and / or assist in lifting students of varying weights. Provide health information to parents, students and staff. Exercise good judgment and make quick decisions in accordance with established procedures. Learn and apply applicable rules, regulations and laws affecting student health and safety. Understand and follow written and oral instructions. Maintain confidential student health information and records. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing in English and a designated second language as needed. Exercise patience, tact, courtesy and concern for the feelings of children and adults in difficult and sometimes stressful situations. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, teachers, administrators, parents and others encountered in the course of work. Adjust and adhere to changes in assignment. Perform routine clerical tasks related to the healthcare of students with exceptional needs; perform related duties as required. Education, Training, and Experience : A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined above is graduation from high school, G.E.D. equivalency or higher. A minimum of one (1) year of experience working in a caring capacity with adults or children. Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements : A valid First Aid and CPR certificate issued by a provider whose course complies with the standards adopted by the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross, pursuant to California Civil Code 1714.2(a). A valid California driver's license. Reliable transportation and current automobile insurance. Variable work schedule, depending on the District's needs. PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Significant lifting or assisting in lifting, students of varying weights, up to fifty (50) pounds alone. Frequent standing; bending; carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling. Significant fine finger dexterity. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Frequent operation of a variety of equipment including computers, nebulizers, adding machines, blood pressure machines, oxygen tanks, suction machines, feeding pumps, etc. The job is performed under some hazardous conditions and in a clean setting.
