Description $21.53/hour This part-time position is about 10-20 hours a week. (1-2 hours in the morning and 1-2 hours in the afternoon) Purpose of Job Under general supervision, is responsible for pedestrian safety and efficient vehicular traffic flow at assigned school zone. II. Essential Job Duties A. Controlling traffic Ensures efficient vehicular traffic flow by directing traffic. Reports major traffic violations to law enforcement. B. Maintaining safety of pedestrians Ensures that children and other pedestrians cross traffic lanes in a safe manner. III. Other Job Duties Performs other job duties as assigned. IV. Primary Job Challenges Primary challenges of this position include performing job duties during inclement weather. V. Equipment Operated None VI. Key Competencies Required Job Content Knowledge Has thorough knowledge of the policies, procedure, and activities of the City and general practices as they pertain to the performance of duties of the position of School Crossing Guard. Has thorough knowledge of School Crossing Guard policies as necessary in the completion of daily responsibilities. Is able to effectively communicate and interact with supervisors, and all other groups involved in the activities of the department. Must be assertive, tactful and able to work in various weather elements for approximately two (2) hours per day during times that school is in session. Language Skills: Ability to read a limited number of two- and three-syllable words and to recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers. Ability to print and speak simple sentences. Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one- or two-step instructions. Ability to deal with repetitive situations with the need for only occasional or no choices to be made. Teamwork: Develops constructive and cooperative working relationships with others. Encourages others to express their ideas and opinions. Provides input into identifying and solving problems. Anticipates need of others for information about job tasks and work environment and provides it to them in a timely manner. Willingly assists others with job tasks when appropriate. VII. Physical Demands and Work Environment Physical Demands: Performance of the essential duties of this job requires the incumbent to: Regularly stand. Regularly walk. Regularly use hands to finger, handle, or feel. Regularly reach with hands and arms. Regularly talk or hear. Work Environment: Performance of the essential duties of this job requires Occasional exposure to fumes or airborne particles Regular exposure to outdoor weather conditions The work environment is moderately noisy (examples: business office with computers and printers, light traffic). Minimum Requirements Qualifications Education and Experience: The required knowledge, skill, and abilities to satisfactorily perform job duties are normally acquired through attainment of a high school diploma or general education degree (GED).
